What’s a new month without some new eats? Welcome back to another edition of #BUROEats, where you get to know our picks of the best new monthly eateries around town. As usual, we’ve saved you the trouble of searching high and low for your next foodie destination. With that, kick back and start taking notes because these are the 12 new restaurants and cafés in KL and PJ—including lively Spanish hotspot Picaro and gelato specialists Orgelato—we think you and your appetite should know about this month.

Hidden away from the bustle of the city centre’s streets is the brand new Spanish hotspot, Picaro. However, don’t let its secluded Nam Kok Hotel location fool you into thinking that it is a serene getaway from the rush of KL. This feisty “kitchen party” eatery is nothing short of lively with music blasting through its speakers, a lively team, pitchers of sangria, tapas plates, open flame cooking, and shots all around! With Su Kim Hock of Penang’s Au Jardin and Un Poco Loco behind the food, you’re guaranteed a memorable time from tapas to table dancing.

2. MESA ON 51

The KL city skyline welcomes another sky dining destination with the opening of Mesa on 51. Coming to you from the famed Marini’s Group, this eatery will transport you to the coasts of Spain with its vibrant menu. Taking the spotlight on its menus is its range of paellas, including a duck paella de pato and a vegetarian paella de verdura. Other highlights include its signature charcoal oven paletilla lamb shoulder that goes perfectly with the restaurant’s refreshing ceviche and smoky Polpo Canario. Don’t forget to order a pitcher of sangria for the table to round off your experience too.

3. TORITO

Soft launched on 2 November, Torito is the Bangyan Tree Kuala Lumpur’s newest dining outlet. With stunning views of KL serving as the backdrop, Torito’s charming interiors are a reflection of its menu, dotted with bright Peruvian-Japanese flavours. Peruvian Chef Ivan Casusol is at the helm here, bringing signature aromas and family recipes from his hometown of Lima. Must-try dishes on the menu include the Conchas appetiser, Sushi Frito, stone ceviche, Wagyu sirloin, and Arroz con pato. As for drinks, browse its selection of pisco-based or Nikkei cocktails for the perfect Torito experience.

Bringing some Southeast Asian charm to the blocks of The Five @ KPD is Oolam. Cosy, chic, and comfortable, this new eatery is a reflection of the region’s culinary heritage. Expect a menu full of rich, herbaceous, and bright flavours as classic dishes are given a refresh with an Oolam touch. From an urap pucuk paku with pegaga to mud crab red curry, your meal here will be a delicious snapshot of Southeast Asia’s best bites.

Also new to The Five @ KPD’s community is modern izakaya Otoba. Taking cues from classic Japanese izakaya fare and other East Asian cuisines, the menu here is filled with creative plates that scream comfort. Great for catch-ups with your pals or a casual date night, this eatery also doubles as an audio bar, playing thoughtful tunes for you to take in while noshing on your food. Start your evening with some baos or gyozas before munching on juicy kushiyaki and robatayaki bites later in the night.

With the team behind Staple Dough taking the lead here, expect pastas to command the spotlight on the menu, though its other dishes are also worthy of adding to your orders . Plus points go to its dishware that add to its overall charm. Current crowd favourites include its duck carbonara and beef cheek ragu. 7. TANAAIR

Bröom Artisan Bakery has unveiled its new concept store driven by local flavours. Positioning itself as a contemporary kampong store, its space will surely evoke feelings of nostalgia and warmth with the aromas of local staples wafting through the air. Its menu is centred around nasi lemak and other rice mains, with a bulk of its menu being dishes that are meant to be eaten with a carb. Current standouts include its nasi lemak with ayam berempah, Muar otak-otak, and rendang tok. Feel free to order a cuppa and kick back with the breeze while here to fully appreciate its cosy surroundings.

OrGelato is the latest entry into the local gelato scene, popping up in Mont Kiara at The MET Corporate Towers. Within its funky space, you’ll find pints and scoops of 12 different gelato flavours, including both dairy and non-dairy options. While there are flavours aplenty, we’ve already cemented some favourites, including its single origin espresso coffee, mango jasmine, Madagascar vanilla, and OG yuzu strawberry sorbet.

Those with a sweet tooth now have another outlet for their cravings with the opening of Scoopy Treats in Desa Sri Hartamas. Here, you’ll get in your fix of ice cream, coffee, and matcha, all of which are always good remedies to beat the heat. Its coffee bean roster includes roasts from Bangkok’s popular Factory. Anyone who likes their coffee strong and chilly should go for the iced shaken espresso, but get a cup of its charcoal latte if you’re in for something a little different.
