8 Coolest gelato places to try in the Klang Valley

Is it just us, or is the heat getting more and more unbearable lately? Enter our saviour: a scoop (or two) of gelato.

In case you didn’t know, gelato is actually the Italian word for ice cream. The process of making gelato begins with a similar custard base as ice cream, but what sets gelato apart is that it has a higher proportion of milk and a lower proportion of cream and eggs (or sometimes no eggs at all). This makes it much, much creamier. Because it’s churned at a slower rate than ice cream, less air is incorporated into the mixture, thus giving gelato a denser texture. The main ingredient of gelatos always tends to shine through because of the lower percentage of fat.

So whatever the reason—be it the heat or you’re just craving a sweet treat—here are eight gelaterias in the Klang Valley you need to visit.

Paolo Paolo may be the new kid on the block, but it has already gained an impressive following. Gelato lovers always seem to be down for a Paolo Paolo scoop and sometimes the line even extends outside their doors—yes, even on weekdays! Its gelato is handcrafted in the store daily and each scoop is utterly dense and creamy.

One thing that sets Paolo Paolo aside from other gelaterias is that the store rotates its flavours everyday. The flavour selection is also rather unique with choices like lemon mascarpone and banoffee pie, pink guava and asam boi, and pear and vanilla sorbet from their sorbet range, which aligns with  its aims to bring out your childhood memories or experiences. Each cup or cone also comes with an added dollop of a second flavour of your choice—a thoughtful touch that lets you indulge in two flavours in one order.

Staying true to their name, Piccoli Lotti (which means ‘small batch’ in Italian), makes its gelato one small batch at a time. The gelateria serves smooth and creamy gelatos with flavours that span from classics like pistachio and hazelnut, to more unique flavours like chrysanthemum with cacao nibs.

A crowd favourite and one of their signature flavours, Pulut Tai Tai is its rendition of a classic nyonya dessert that’s made with glutinous rice, fresh santan, swirls of homemade kaya, and butterfly pea flower for the natural blue colour.

An award-winning brand located in Desa Parkcity, Whimsical Artisanal Gelato infuses local flavours into its sweet creations. The flavour that took home the prize during the Gelato World Tour (Asia Pacific) is the Vanilla of the East, a gelato that consists of vanilla beans infused with pandan and drizzled with gula melaka and basil seeds.

One flavour that is truly Malaysian is the Nasi Lemak Gelato—yes, everyone’s favourite meal in one scoop. The gelato is made with rice cooked with coconut milk, sambal, crunchy peanuts and anchovies, so you’ll be indulging in an array of textures and flavours all at once.
