This month, sit back and enjoy a thrilling lineup of new small-screen offerings to keep you entertained. From side-splitting comedies and dark mystery thrillers to swoon-worthy romances, finding something good to watch won’t be a case of “maybe” (yes, the pun is very much intended) but definitely! Ahead, here are 15 exciting TV shows and films to stream in May 2024.

 

The Idea of You

When and where: 2 May 2024 on Prime Video 

Watch if: You’re looking for a whirlwind romance 

Starring: Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galitzine

Imagine your mother dating the frontman of a famous pop boy band. In The Idea of You, Solène unexpectedly captures the attention of Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of August Moon AKA the hottest boy band on the planet. While the chemistry between the pair is immediate and undeniable, the 40-year-old single mother must come to terms with whether this whirlwind romance with the 24-year-old pop star is worth fighting for under the glare of the spotlight.

Turtles All The Way Down

Watch if: You want to see how OCD is portrayed in a relationship

Starring: Isabela Merced, Cree, Felix Mallard

Life isn’t easy for 17-year-old Aza Holmes. On top of trying to be a good daughter, friend and model student, she also suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and is trapped in the prison of her thoughts. When she reconnects with Davis, her childhood crush, Aza is confronted with fundamental questions about her potential for love, happiness, friendship, and hope.

Watch if: You love a good origin story 

Starring: Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Hugh Grant, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer

In the world of cereal, nothing is more tense than the sworn rivalry between Kellogg’s and Post. Set in 1963 Michigan, the two brands engage in a cereal race to change the concept of breakfast forever. Expect betrayal, ambition, sugary-sweet success and menacing milkmen in this comedy. Now, if they can tackle the age-old debate of whether it should be cereal or milk first, that would be great…

Monsters at Work Season 2

Watch if: You love the Disney movie 

In the second season of the beloved animated film’s spin-off series, screams are out and laughter is in. Thanks to Mike and Sulley’s discovery that laughter generates 10 times more energy than screams, the city of Monstropolis has evolved to harvest the power of giggles. Tylor Tuskmon looks like a typical monster and has always thought he would grow up to be a scarer. Unsure of whether he should pursue his new dream of being a Jokester instead, he is assigned to the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team with a team of misfits. Follow the creature as he decides what his true calling is.

The Traffic Crime Investigation (TCI) Team doesn’t exactly spring to mind when you think of security forces. Repeatedly ignored by the rest of the force and considered a joke by man, the TCI team has much to prove. When a genius mathematician joins the team, things quickly turn around as he can deduce the cause of an accident from his impressive cognitive abilities. However, he lacks social skills and isn’t exactly a team player. Can the TCI Team escape the shadow of obscurity and climb their way to respect?

Fans of South Korea’s killer death game genre will want to tune in to The 8 Show. In this upcoming series, eight individuals from different walks of life are trapped in a mysterious eight-storey building where they must participate in a tempting but dangerous show to earn money for a mysterious audience.

When and where: 24 May 2024 on Netflix

Watch if: Simu Liu as an evil AI robot. That’s it.

Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown

In this action-packed feature, Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence (AI), joins a mission to capture a rogue robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. However, when plans go awry, she must trust AI to save the future of humanity.

When and where: 30 May 2024 on Netflix 

Watch if: You want a crime drama with a twist

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Gaby Hoffmann, McKinley Belcher III

Set in 1980s New York, this limited series follows the desperate search of a father when his nine-year-old son disappears on the way to school. Vincent is one of the city’s leading puppeteers and creator of a hugely popular children’s television show. After his son goes missing, he becomes increasingly disillusioned and volatile, clinging to the hope that if he can bring his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, to life, Edgar will come home. As his increasingly destructive behaviour alienates him from those trying to help him, Vincent finds himself obsessively relying on Eric to bring his son home.
