5 Ways the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute improved my home hygiene

You know the saying, “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone”? I’d argue that the opposite is also true: you don’t know what you have until something forces you to stare right at it. In my case, the Dyson Absolute V15 vacuum made me realise how much dirt, dust and invisible particles lie in every nook, cranny and surface of my humble abode.

Sure, I’m far from what one might consider “OCD” or obsessed with cleanliness and hygiene à la Monica Geller from Friends. However, I do uphold certain hygiene practices on top of the usual household cleaning routines, such as disallowing “outside” clothes on my bed and sanitising my devices regularly. I even keep a small hand-held vacuum cleaner within easy reach to keep signs of hair fall to a minimum, at least in my room (especially when I had longer tresses).

With that said, little did I know that the opportunity to review the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute (HEPA) vacuum would instill greater diligence on my part to upkeep my home. As a matter of fact, I don’t dread cleaning with my new toy—and I daresay a small part of me actually looks forward to doing it more regularly.

Specifically, I’ve counted five ways the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute has helped to improve my home hygiene habits. Watch my quick take in the video below and scroll on for the full account. (Warning: dirty talk ahead, literally.)

1. Cleaning beds and sofas

If you think washing your bed sheets regularly is good enough, wait until you see the stuff that comes out of deep cleaning your mattress with the Dyson V15. (Spoiler: it’s not pretty.) Again, this is coming from someone who only allows “house clothes” (read: clothing worn only at home) or pjyamas on the bed. The same can be said for sofas, more so if you regularly binge on snacks while watching TV or identify as a couch potato.

Thanks to Dyson’s 5-stage advanced filtration technologies and the HEPA filtration upgrade on the range-topping variant, it is able to capture 99.97 per cent of particles as small as 0.1 microns. This means it can trap ultra-fine particles such as dust mites and dead skin flakes (or even pet dander, if you sleep with your pet)—making it the brand’s most hygienic vacuum and its best-ever filtration in a cordless vacuum. In other words, it’s perfect for those who are very sensitive to irritants!  I now try to make it a monthly routine to vacuum my bed and sofa, and the results are categorically satisfying.

2. Vacuuming around and underneath large furniture

Dyson’s Dust Illumination Technology

I can’t be the only one to use “out of sight, out of mind” as my excuse to avoid cleaning under the furniture, right? Cue the Dust Illumination Technology on the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute, which reveals particles typically invisible to the naked eye through a precisely angled laser integrated into the Slim Fluffy cleaner head. Not so out of sight anymore—but in the most effective way. This green laser diode, chosen for its ability to provide the best contrast, is positioned precisely at a 1.5-degree angle 7.3mm off the ground to expose hidden dust, especially in dark spaces or even white floors. The cleaner head is also rotatable and convenient to manouevre, cutting down reasons not to clean these areas.

Dyson’s Awkward Gap tool

Plus, the new Awkward Gap tool makes it easier to reach narrow gaps between furniture.  The tool features a width of 12.5mm and 254mm reach, equipped with a secondary brush at the tip to tackle more stubborn dirt. It functions similarly to the existing Crevice tool (also included with Dyson’s full suite of 12 vacuum cleaner accessories); but twists at an optimum angle to clean awkward corners and hard-to-reach places without losing suction.

3. Removing dust from delicate surfaces

Dyson’s Scratch-free Dusting Brush

One of my favourite new accessories introduced with the Dyson V15 is the Scratch-free Dusting Brush, which features 8,100 ultra-soft and densely packed Polybuylene Terephthalate (PBT) polymer filaments—a material used in fine paint and makeup brushes. In other words, the 0.05mm bristles are specially designed for removing dust and debris without scratching delicate surfaces.

It’s also Dyson’s first self-cleaning dusting brush, equipped with a rotating cuff that removes residue dust from the bristles hygienically and effectively. This makes it ideal for cleaning mirrors, TVs, musical instruments (like pianos), photo frames, and the like. I even use it to “dust” my mechanical keyboard and perfume bottles, which I find more practical than wiping them down with a cloth.

4. Cleaning walls and ceilings

The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute (HEPA) comes with a variety of attachments for versatile cleaning.

In case you’re blissfully oblivious, vertical surfaces and ceilings are prone to collecting dust and cobwebs too. (So much for gravity, but I digress.) While it isn’t necessary to clean these areas as often as those mentioned above, I’d add it to my household roster every three to four months. I won’t lie, this will be quite the workout because you’ll be carrying roughly 3.08kg with the wand and motor head attached to the Dyson V15.

Dyson V15 Detect Absolute features a built-in crevice and dusting tool.

On the bright side, the fact that it’s cordless means you won’t have to worry about wires getting in the way. Not to mention, the built-in crevice and dusting tool that’s ingeniously hidden inside the wand is accessible at the press of a button, saving time switching between floor/ceiling and handheld cleaning while also shaving off some weight for vacuuming surfaces within closer reach.

5. Reducing pet hair and dander

Disclaimer: I don’t have a pet (as much as I’d like one). While this means I’m probably luckier than those with furry companions when it comes to cleaning, I’m not a complete stranger to the hassle of dealing with fur balls and pet dander. My partner’s dogs—an adorable Shih Tzu and a handsome rescue from a local shelter, if you’re curious—shed an alarming amount of fur daily, as I’ve observed from my countless visits. And that’s not counting the other microscopic particles they may leave behind.

Here’s where Dyson’s new Digital Motorbar™ cleaner head comes in handy to tackle all hair, whether left behind by felines, canines, or human occupants. It is equipped with an advanced de-tangling comb featuring 56 hair removal vanes that are precisely angled to help migrate all hair types directly into the cleaner head. Combined with a set of spiralling nylon bristles, anti-static carbon fibre filaments, and strong suction power, these polycarbonate teeth sucks troublesome tangles along with larger dirt and microscopic dust into the bin.

Dyson’s Pet Groom tool

In addition, the Dyson Pet Groom tool is engineered to remove your pet’s loose hairs, pet dander and skin flakes. It has 364 bristles angled at 35 degrees to reach through your pet’s coat to grab loose hairs for fast and comfortable grooming. This reduces the amount of pet hair and microscopic particles they shed around the home. (Note: the attachment is backward compatible, so you can opt to buy and use this tool separately with older Dyson cordless vacuums.)

The psychology of cleaning

I’ve touched on how the Dyson V15 has improved my hygiene, now let me explain why. One feature that makes cleaning all the more satisfying is the Piezo Sensor, which measures the collected dust and displays the data on the vacuum’s LCD screen for real time proof of a deep clean. They say knowledge is power, and seeing the results of your hard work—down to the dust size and quantity of microscopic particles you’ve gotten rid of—definitely offers that sense of control over your environment.

Further, the vacuum is designed to automatically increase suction power when the sensor detects high concentrations of dust in Auto mode. When dust levels normalise, the suction power reverts to the normal level. This allows users to concentrate on high-dust areas for more thorough and stress-relieving cleaning. Simply put, the psychological factor plays a significant role in motivating me to maintain this hygiene routine.

Do you need this upgrade?

Launched in October 2022, the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute and Dyson V15 Detect Absolute (HEPA) are the latest and most advanced Dyson vacuum cleaners to date with 240AW of suction power. If you’re new to the brand, then these are the best models to buy for the full suite of Dyson’s cordless vacuum capabilities. The former is capable of capturing 99.99 per cent of particles as small as 0.3 microns which is sufficient for most households, whilst the latter is ideal for those with allergies and sensitivities (as mentioned in my first point). Other than that, the HEPA variant comes with two additional tools, namely the up-top adaptor and mini soft dusting brush for more versatility.

Alternatively, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is a great option if you prefer something more lightweight (2.2kg) yet still relatively powerful (150AW of suction power); while the Dyson Omniglide (1.5kg) is designed to be compact and manoeuvrable for efficient, everyday cleaning.

The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute (HEPA) is priced at RM4,999 and is exclusive to Dyson Demo stores and www.dyson.my only. Shop the full range of Dyson vacuums here
