#FitnessFridays: Team workout at Fuel Athletics
An adrenaline-fueled start
Cai Mei Khoo, Editor-in-Chief
I tend to veer towards exercises that are less strenuous—pilates, yoga or running, so functional training is something I've made a conscious decision to veer away from, until now. Our session at Fuel Athletics was a great introduction to what an actual class is like, and it's not as scary as I'd imagined it to be (no lifting of truck tyres here, or not in this class at least). It's tough—kettlebell swings and burpees are two of my least favourite exercises, and the two we did the most of in this class and the little competition between the two teams to see who could do the most burpees had me aching all over the next morning.

I've never done functional training in my life and my initial idea of it (or what I've seen on social media) was that it's definitely not for the faint-hearted. I've always liked doing exercises that focused on training my flexibility and sculpting my body such as Barre and pilates, so functional training sounded daunting to me. But after this session at Fuel (yes, I survived), I realised that there were a couple of components that improved my flexibility as well, and it wasn't that much of a testosterone-fueled workout as I'd initially thought it would be. I also found that they have a tight community that help each other push the limits—it feels like a very encouraging environment, and that's what I like about it.

Coming from someone who enjoys Barre and hasn't tried Crossfit, functional training at Fuel Athletics just about kicked my butt and had me falling with my face flat on the ground (not literally, well almost if you count burpees). But I can see why those who like it, will continue to come for training. Coach Fayzal gave us a great headstart to functional training, from an intensive warmup to introducing the importance of each movement. Lesson 1: Always squat when you lift something heavy off the ground, and keep your back straight. The killer was the infinity(!) number of burpees with five ball tosses we had to carry out during the last round of team-building—I was in pain for the next four days, but no regrets!
