The 2024 Video Music Awards have done it again! As usual, the awards night delivered what it’s known for: iconic performances and pop culture moments that will be remembered for years to come. On 11 September, the best of pop graced New York’s UBS Arena, from music royalties such as Taylor Swift, Eminem and Katy Perry to burgeoning stars such as Chappell Roan and Benson Boone.
Going into the night, Taylor Swift led the nomination with 12 nods while her Fortnight collaborator Post Malone followed with 11. Both artists were the big winners of the night as Swift and Malone left with seven and five spacemans respectively, including the most coveted category when Fortnight was named Video of the Year. This puts the Anti-Hero singer as the most decorated artist in the history of the VMAs with a total of 30 trophies.
This year’s Video Vanguard award went to Katy Perry, a pop culture icon and one of the best-selling artists in the world with over 143 million units worldwide. During the night, the Daisies singer performed a medley of her hits such as California Girls, Dark Horse and Teenage Dream. She is expected to release her upcoming seventh studio album, 143, on 20 September.
Apart from the mainstays, the night also saw dazzling performances from newcomers. Namely, Best New Artist winner Chappell Roan’s medieval-inspired stage for her hit Good Luck, Babe was epic in both scale and skill.
Sabrina Carpenter—who performed at the pre-show just last year—debuted onto the main stage with an extraterrestrial ensemble to perform Please, Please, Please and her breakout single Espresso, the latter winning the prestigious Song of the Year.
Benson Boone, who took home Best Alternative, stunned with the viral track Beautiful Things when he launched into the air with a flip before belting out the chorus.
K-pop also continues to be a growing presence at the VMAs. Lisa of Blackpink lit up her maiden solo stage with her latest singles, New Woman and Rockstar, under her record label Lloud. The rapper took home Best K-pop.
Furthermore, Seventeen won Best Group, beating out Coldplay, Imagine Dragons and NewJeans. The boy group has recently performed at Lollapalooza Berlin, becoming the first K-pop act to headline the music festival in the country.
