Where to eat in the Klang Valley this month: A rainforest-themed bar and grill at the heart of KL; a casual, family-friendly Italian restaurant in Mont Kiara; and a double-storey bakehouse cum cafe in Empire Damansara are among the hottest new spots on our radar. 

 

1. Ferria KL

Brought to you by the team behind its next-door neighbour, Finch, Ferria is a rainforest-themed modern grill and bar tucked inside The Westin Kuala Lumpur. Boasting verdant greenery hanging from its ceilings and adorning its walls with matching leaf-print chairs to boot, the space promises to transport visitors from the heart of KL into the wild. As for the menu, expect a selection of grilled meats and seafood, pasta, pizzas and sharing plates, alongside vibrant cocktails with tropical touches.

2. Kobu Omakase

Kobu Omakase is one of the latest additions to the city’s ever-expanding list of omakase restaurants, occupying a bungalow in Imbi. The beautiful dining destination boasts 5,000 square feet of space, making it ideal for private events, celebrations and parties. Taking inspiration from nature, its interiors feature a harmonious blend of textures on the walls, floors and ceilings, punctuated by understated wooden furniture that altogether creates a modern zen-like space. Omakase meals start from RM288++ per person, with other lunch and dinner sets also available alongside optional sake pairing.

3. V88 Starhill

After opening outlets in Desa Park City and Chinatown, V88 has proudly launched its third location inside Eslite at Starhill. The all-day restaurant brands itself as “KL’s first listening cafe and bar”—built around its vintage sound system and music curation in partnership with Fono, a boutique agency that specialises in all-vinyl DJ sets and events. In terms of the menu, V88 Starhill offers Japanese fusion fare, especially yakitori, best paired with your choice ice-cold beer or cocktail. Every Friday and Saturday, the place morphs into a music oasis featuring music-sharing sessions with DJs playing strictly on vinyl.

4. Osteria Emilia

Located at 163 Retail Park, Osteria Emilia is Mont Kiara’s new Italian restaurant with a casual, family-friendly setting. Floor-to-ceiling wine shelves frame the space while displaying its arsenal of whites and reds, with equally tall and wide windows allowing ample sunlight in for a warm ambience during the day. You’ll find a decent variety of hearty Italian creations on the menu, including antipasti, risotto, pasta, pizza, and classic desserts. The restaurant is currently still in its soft-opening stage and accepts limited reservations only.

5. Sunyay Bakehouse

Every day is ‘Sunyay’ at this summery pastry cafe and bakehouse in Empire Damansara. Previously known as Lush Cafe, this revamped double-storey bakery is set to draw pastry addicts for a taste of its assortment of baked goods. Aside from Danish pastries, petit gateau, cakes and buns, the cafe also serves hot meals such as bagel burgers, rice dishes, and pasta. Top your meal off with your preferred cup of coffee or tea for a delightful breakfast or tea-time treat!

6. Napa Thai Cuisine

Fans of Thai fare, this new pork-free Thai restaurant in Sri Hartamas may be up your alley. Opened in April 2023, Napa Thai Cuisine offers a modern, spacious dining atmosphere for family and friends to get together over a casual meal. The sizeable menu comprises colourful intepretations of classic Thai dishes, be it crispy seafood herb omelette, crab fried rice or seafood tom yum. Among the signature dishes to order include Pan Fried Squid Egg, slow cooked marinated lamb shank (Nong Kea Aob Prik Geang), and Chantaburi Province-style Pad Thai.

7. Seed by Whitegrass

Calling The Five in Bukit Damansara its home, Seed by Whitegrass serves up contemporary French-Japanese cuisine through carefully curated degustation menus. Launched as a local spin-off of Singapore’s Michelin-starred Whitegrass, the restaurant presents a unique dining experience with its curved counter seats surrounding the open kitchen. Helmed by 29-year-old Chef Joshua, Seed is set to entice avid gourmands with its inventive use of ingredients and culinary techniques.

8. Mo By Jas

Cheras welcomed another new cafe by the name of Mo by Jas, which just opened its doors barely two weeks ago. Tucked in Taman Len Seng, this pet-friendly spot features minimal, modest interiors characterised by wooden furniture and a literal hole in the wall forming a window of sorts. It serves a humble selection of pancakes, bagels and cakes, as well as crafted coffee and tea beverages. Pet owners can also pick up a treat or two for their furry friends while they’re here!
