Editor’s picks: The best suitcases for long-haul adventures

Given that travelling is a regular part of my day job, something I’ve been doing for over a decade now, I’ve pretty much nailed down my pre-trip packing routine. For example, I have an essential checklist—as I’m sure many do—sorted into different categories, divided into undergarments, toiletries, makeup, gadgets, clothes, footwear, accessories, and food. When it comes to packing, I’m rather specific about what goes into my suitcase versus what I keep in my carry-on. Beyond the basics, I always make sure to pack some comfort extras, like a travel pillow, a reliable pair of headphones, compression socks, and sometimes even a cosy blanket to make those long journeys more bearable.

It goes without saying that finding the right luggage is crucial. It needs to be versatile, spacious, easy to carry, and, let’s not forget, stylish. Recently, I had the chance to test out a new range of suitcases for my seasonal trip to Milan for Fashion Week. Packing for such an event is no small feat, especially considering Italy’s cold weather at the time—I needed plenty of room for all my winter gear. Naturally, the luggage had to be sleek, durable, and scuff-resistant to withstand the bumps and knocks of transit. Enter the Samsonite Minter collection, which I had the pleasure of reviewing for this trip. The luggage brand is renowned for its expertise in the world of travel gear, and each design is carefully built for functionality, style, and convenience. At first glance, the sophisticated luggage design immediately caught my eye—the modern appearance, featuring fine vertical grooves punctuated by a long aluminium logo bar, exudes elegance and luxury. Ahead, find a breakdown of my favourite features.

THE CABIN COMPANION

For me, a carry-on suitcase is a non-negotiable must-have for both long and short travels. At 55cm tall, this exceptional piece boasts ample space and multiple pockets within the main compartment, providing lots of room for all my essentials. Here, I pack my tech devices, some snacks, and, of course, a couple of clothing sets—one for lounging and another formal—along with a spare pair of shoes just in case my main luggage is delayed (God forbid!).

One of the most important factors to consider is manoeuvrability, especially for this trip spanning from Kuala Lumpur through a transit in Doha, Qatar, and onward to Milan. The Minter cabin bag ticks all the right boxes with its four wheels, relieving the weight off my wrist and effortlessly gliding from forward with minimal pushing effort, thanks to its Aero-TracTMII Suspension Wheel System with shock-absorbing mechanism and built-in ball bearings. Moreover, security is an utmost priority, and the TSA008 combination lock and anti-theft double zipper provide enhanced protection, ensuring peace of mind as I rest during long-haul flights.

THE MAIN CHARACTER

Moving on to the main checked luggage, where I store all my necessities, is the large Minter suitcase, measuring 75cm and weighing 4.6 kg. It features multiple functional compartments and a complete interior packing system. From an extendable body to compression cross ribbons, a detachable divider and integrated accessory pockets, it also includes a water-resistant toiletry bag and a removable suiter system to keep my coats, shoes, bags, and clothes organised.

Despite its generous size and being packed to the brim, opening and zipping it up is a breeze. Additionally, the design includes the convenience of a front hanging hook. The luxurious, durable exterior—that can withstand being tossed around from country to country, and at baggage claim—is complemented by an interior fully covered with high-quality jacquard lining constructed from Recyclex material derived from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled PET bottles. This gives me the sweet added advantage of reducing my carbon footprint while travelling.

Verdict

In conclusion, my experience with the Samsonite Minter collection has been incredibly positive. The functionality, style, and durability of both the cabin and checked luggage meet my expectations. From the ample storage space and thoughtful organisational features to the ease of manoeuvrability and enhanced security measures, these suitcases have proven to be reliable travel companions. Additionally, the eco-friendly materials used in their construction make me feel better about my picks.
