BURO Gadget Guide: 4 Outstanding new tech gadgets unveiled in January 2024

Though January saw just a handful of new releases in the tech world, those that did make their first appearances were nothing short of major. Three new flagship smartphones were introduced and an iconic collaboration between the fashion and audio world made waves in both industries. Here is our rundown of all the releases you need to know from the first month of the year.

Powered by the groundbreaking Galaxy AI—which also made its debut this month—is the Samsung S24 series of smartphones. Revealed on 17 January at the Samsung Unpacked event in San Jose, the new Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra promise to enrich your day-to-day life with its artificial intelligence abilities.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is the flagship phone of the new lineup aimed at making your creative, professional, and leisure lives smarter. Constructed with a titanium frame—a first for the brand—and reinforced with Corning Gorilla Armor on its screen, the Galaxy S24 Ultra was built for high-performance everyday use. Its screen is a whopping 6.8-inch, 3120 x 1440 resolution QHD+ dynamic AMOLED 2X display, complemented by a 120Hz refresh rate and Vision Booster. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is also equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, making multitasking an easy, breezy experience.

With five lenses on the phone, the S24 Ultra’s photography capabilities are among the best in the game, complete with 2x, 5x, and 10x optical quality zooms. When it comes to its artificial intelligence powers, Galaxy AI touches just about every experience on the S24 Ultra and the other smartphones in the lineup. The AI-powered ProVisual Engine was developed to make photo taking and editing as advanced as possible in the palm of your hand. Also on the AI train is the phone’s Circle to Search function, which makes learning and exploring easier as it allows instant Google searches on anything on your screen. Other communication tools made possible by Galaxy AI are Live Translate, Chat Assist, Note Assist, and Transcript Assist.

Not to be forgotten are the other two phones in the lineup, the Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24. Coming in with a 6.7-inch QHD+ display and a 6.2-inch FHD+ display respectively, the two phones also bring with them massive performance improvements and, of course, AI-backed tools. Both devices are built with space-grade Armour Aluminium exteriors and are available in seven different colours.

The Reno11 Pro

Inspired by nature and designed to maximise your creative potential, Oppo’s all-new Reno11 series consists of the Reno11 Pro and the Reno11. The Reno11 Pro’s design is a nod to the sparkling white lustre of pearls, giving the phone an iridescent and classy finish. Etched with no less than 3.6 million tiny microscopic surfaces, the Reno11 Pro’s topmost layer has a textured finish that adds a shimmer to its exterior. Its ultra-slim body also provides for a comfortable in-hand experience. Your photo-taking experience on the Reno11 Pro gets an upgrade with Ultra-Clear Portrait Camera System and HyperTone Imaging Engine, developed and refined for the Reno11 Pro respectively. The latter is an AI-powered feature that refines and clarifies images to produce high-quality portrait photos. Similarly, Oppo’s new Portrait Mode function makes use of artificial intelligence too with AI Portrait Retouching, bringing vibrance to skin tones and more.

The Reno11

Paying tribute to the deep green waves of the sea, the Reno11’s signature colourway is a mark of modernity and thoughtfulness. Its 6.7-inch AMOLED screen creates brilliant images for your viewing pleasure, while the 120Hz refresh rate makes every gesture smooth and seamless. Also kitted out with the Ultra-Clear Portrait Camera System, the Reno11 is capable of taking some of the clearest and most striking images in the smartphone world. Identical to the Reno11 Pro, the Reno11 comes with four lenses: a 50MP Ultra-Clear main camera, a 32MP telephoto portrait camera, a 112-degree Ultra-Wide camera, and a 32MP Ultra-Clear selfie camera with autofocus.

Leading fashion house Celine has joined forces with audio giants Master & Dynamic to create a trio of headphones that excel in style and sound. These headphones made their debut at Celine’s SS24 womenswear show, ‘La Collection de la Bibliothèque Nationale’, where they appeared in a short film. Available in three colourways—monochrome black, black and silver, and tan and silver—and inspired by the design of World War II aviator headphones, the headphones are constructed with anodised aluminium and calfskin leather. You’ll spot the Celine label engraved on one side of the headphones and the iconic Triomphe logo on the other.

The headphones are equipped with Bluetooth 5.2 and an impressive 30-hour battery life. According to Celine, these headphones were designed to bring out “clear highs and rich lows as well as sound isolation”, combining sound quality with impeccable style. Subtle design details—like the laser-engraved ‘Celine Paris’ on the charging wire—also add a touch of class and quiet luxury to the device. The epitome of wearable technology, these headphones will add some edge and sleekness to every outfit.
