7 Things to do in the Klang Valley this weekend: 1 & 2 April 2023

Just like that, April is almost here, along with Autism Awareness Month. Not to mention, springtime has already begun (in some parts of the world, at least) and so has the fasting season, with Hari Raya around the corner. Suffice it to say, there’s plenty to catch up on during our off days—here are seven suggestions we have for this weekend:

1. SAVOUR A TASTE OF NOBU KL’S HANAMI HIGH TEA AFFAIR

Where: Nobu Kuala Lumpur, Four Seasons Hotel

When: 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 April 2023

Price: RM158 nett per person

“Not able to see the sakura this season? Fret not as Nobu KL’s latest high tea offering promises all things sakura to tantalise your senses. Named after the famous Japanese Hanami Festival, the Nobu KL Hanami High Tea captures the beauty and sweet taste of the cherry blossoms that are *almost* too pretty to eat. It comprises three courses: cold dishes, warm dishes and desserts. Apart from the food, I also tried the specially-concocted Sakura Masu Cocktail which is made up of Sakura-infused tequila, lychee juice and Umeshu syrup that is deliciously (and dangerously!) sweet.

“The cold dishes comprised a trio of Sauté Abalone in butter soy, Boiled Hotaru Ika (firefly squid) served with Wakame in a pool of umami broth, and Madai Temari which is a rice ball topped with Seabream wrapped in Sakura leaf. Out of the three, I enjoyed the Hotaru Ika the most due to its clean flavours.

“Next, I was served another trio of warm dishes made up of Wagyu Sando, King Crab Cold Chukka Ramen, Foie Gras Yuzu Marmalade and a side of edamame. The Foie Gras was a real standout as its fattiness was perfectly balanced with the marmalade, while the edible sakura flower shell it was encased in was a great medium to hold it all together. On the other hand, the Wagyu Sando was rather rich and heavy as the meat was deep-fried and in a buttery sandwich. I was given two cubes of it which was more than enough—but this just means that the set is good value for money!

“I’m also glad to say I ended the high tea literally on a high as the desserts were delicious (and alright, maybe I did have another cocktail or two…). Served in a bento of three once again, the sweet treats consisted of Peach Cheesecake with Clear Jelly, Sakura Ice Cream Sandwich and a White Goma Mochi. The cheesecake was smooth, but it was missing the peach flavour. Conversely, the ice cream sandwich was fantastic and the mochi was the real winner for its amazingly soft cloud-like texture and beautiful sakura tea cremeux! After having the nine dishes, I walked away full and satisfied. Overall, the Hanami High Tea is a delicious way to celebrate the sakura season right in the heart of KL.” — Marissa Chin, Lifestyle & Culture Writer
