#FitnessFriday: Team tries TRX Suspension at Babel KLCC

Keep hanging on!

Team Buro Malaysia tried TRX Suspension for this edition of #FitnessFriday. Find out how we did in the video below

To work out or not to work out... that is the question. Ultimately, we did and a thorough one too. The Buro team decided to challenge ourselves at the newly opened Babel KLCC gym. How? With TRX Suspension, of course! Find out more about what this painful-sounding exercise is in the video above. Guided by Evon Tan, we sure did our best to pull through a macabre 45 minutes. Well, horrible for most of us but can you guess who had no issues with the programme?

I've only ever tried TRX Suspension once and it sure wasn't as tough as this session at Babel KLCC. A total body workout that requires some skill in coordination and balance, it left me aching in the right places for days—and that's the butt, the glutes, the core, the shoulder blades... basically, almost the whole body. I dare say, it's definitely effective. Evon had a chirpy personality that kept motivating us to hang on (yes, pun intended) longer. My only constructive criticism of the class was that the instructor could personally go over to help out those who needed assistance in positioning the body. Despite that, 10/10, I'd still go back! As a treat, Evon let us try out Babel KLCC's R&R session too where we got to use foam rollers and a tennis ball to massage out the muscles to aid with recovery. Since I was in so much pain the next day, I wondered if I'd have been in more pain had we not done the class. That being said, the R&R definitely left my muscles feeling pretty good.

I may have underestimated the TRX class before it started—I mean, how tough can working out with these suspended bands really be, right? Let's just say that it was an eye-opening, butt-kicking 45-minute session that really changed my perspective on the efficacy (and sheer challenge) of this workout. Ten minutes into the class and I was already flailing for air/water/a break, basically. We started out with core exercises which were no mean feat as we had to engage our core all the time throughout elbow-to-hand planks, mountain climbers, and side knee tucks—and then came the leg and back exercises that really whooped our muscles into shape. Thankfully, we had a chance to stretch and loosen out said muscles during the R&R session right after (I may or may not have groaned loudly in relief when we were busting out the foam rollers). That said, the aching I felt the day after easily took the top spot on my list of workouts-to-try-if-you-want-to-be-shrivel-in-pain-for-a-week. Easily the most underrated but challenging class we've tried on #FitnessFriday so far.

Confession: I quite fancy TRX workouts since we're building strength using our own body weight sans any heavy barbells so when I heard that Babel KLCC's TRX Suspension class was our next #FitnessFriday workout, I was pretty pumped. For a 45-minute class (which went by super quick), we really worked up a sweat starting with the very first series of planks that fired up not just our core (do we have abs yet?) but also our heart-rate in mere minutes. After all the ab-burning reps, we worked on our pectorals, biceps, triceps, glutes and legs; the killer for me was the harder-than-it-looks one-legged mid-air squats and I'm sure my colleagues would agree! I appreciated the R&R session after our TRX class too, since we spent a good few minutes in each stretch position using props like a foam roller and tennis ball to massage our sore joints and alleviate muscle tightness. PS: You know it's a solid workout when everyone can't stop talking about how sore they're feeling for the next couple of days!

If I could describe Babel's TRX Suspension class in two words, it'd be... painfully effective. TBH, I was very intimidated at the start of the class because I was a complete beginner when it came to the equipment, but our instructor Evon gave a quick crash course before starting and reminders along the way throughout the session—very helpful for someone who is as uncoordinated as I am. However, figuring out how to work the equipment was the least of my problems. The class was very challenging, and had me working up a serious sweat. My abs have never done so many planks and worked so hard in one sitting. The R&R class that followed was a good wind down, allowing the body to cool down. I also picked up some tips on how to knead my muscles to lessen the soreness after a crazy workout. Alas, the TRX workout was so intense, I could not sneeze, cough nor laugh for a good three days without being reminded of the ab workout.

So many firsts for me! My first #Fitness Friday, my first workout at Babel KLCC, my first workout with the team, and my first time trying TRX Suspension. Let's just say I walked into the studio with the enthusiasm of a child with Pokemon but came out completely drained and unrecognisable. Oh yes, I'm using that word. Right off the bat when we began with the planks, I knew the next 45 minutes weren't going to be enjoyable. Boy was I so on point! I suffered throughout regardless of which parts of my body were being tortured worked on. The strain on my pectorals, biceps, triceps, glutes, and legs were apparent of someone who doesn't exercise (the most I do is dance). The next few days were oh-so-tough! The Weeknd might be a Starboy but I'm definitely Soreboy. The team at Babel KLCC prepared a R&R session for us to unwind and relax our muscles after TRX Suspension. I'm not sure if I did that wrongly or it just did not help me. Or maybe my body would have felt worse without. Either way, Evon was really encouraging and I might—might—consider going again for some good old hanging fun.

I could not feel most parts of my body for at least a week after the TRX Suspension class at Babel KLCC! Even though it's not a cardio concentrated class, it still got my heart pumped real fast and I like how it targets your upper, middle and lower body. There are a few variations you can try during class (regression and progression) depending on your fitness level, so this is suitable for beginners or experts! After the intense TRX workout, we were given a 30-minute session of R&R (recovery and rejuvenation) using a foam roller and a tennis ball. Don't be fooled by its name, it was quite a painful session especially on the glutes area! But it really helped in releasing most of the tense muscles I have on my body.
