While purists can stay content with the fuss-free ham, egg, or mayo fillings, the more adventurous can experiment with unconventional flavour combos and all sorts of sauces. 1. LA SPIGA D’ORO

First starting out in a small apartment shoplot, this husband-and-wife-run deli offers the simple, rustic flavours of Italy that truly hit the spot. Now housed in a modern Taman Desa space, this eatery uses cured meat and cheeses imported from Italy, so you’re promised the best cuts daily. The star of the show here is obviously its traditional Roman schiacciata sandwiches, made with freshly baked flatbread. Our current favourite is the Maria, made with prosciutto cotto, fresh burrata and roasted cherry tomatoes. Beyond their sandwiches, you’ll also find cured meat platters, salads, and other small bites on the menu.

It’s currently operating out of a cosy space in Triptyk, but rest assured its flavours go big. Its Lara Supreme will never do you dirty, keeping things indulgent (hello hashbrowns) with a berry jam twist. If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty while you eat, then go for the Joe Got Sloppy, complete with a spicy meat-tomato sauce and torched cheddar. To keep track of where they’ll be popping up next, be sure to check its Instagram for updates.

If you know bread, you know Universal Bakehouse. It has made a name for itself in the sourdough and focaccia game, which means its sandwiches are just as killer too. After all, the bread can make or break a sandwich, right? The sandwich selection operates on a rotational basis with the location at The Campus Ampang getting a couple of exclusives. Our favourites include the pesto eggplant focaccia and the lamb kofta sandwich. If you’re not too hungry, go for its tartines, which are still packed with flavour—with half the amount of bread.
