#BUROEats: 7 New cafes and restaurants to visit in the Klang Valley this December 2022

Where to eat in the Klang Valley this month: a cafe that moonlights as a restobar in Bukit Jalil, an Italian casual dining concept in Chinatown, and an experimental “dark” coffee bar in Ampang, among others.

1. Oomph

Taste the ‘Oomph’ at one of Bukit Jalil’s latest haunts—a contemporary cafe by day that transforms into a restobar by night. The new hangout spot is a product of collaboration between Brew & Bread and Guang Bar—a fact best represented by the abstract neon lights illuminating the counter where pastries and desserts take the spotlight. Bottles of wine line the shelves on one wall (not just for show), whilst unusual plant installations spruce up the sizeable space. Come during the day for brunch and coffee, stay in the evening for a variety of mains and cheese platters served with a side of live band performances. The team also has plans to open a second outlet in Petaling Jaya, so keep a lookout for more exciting updates soon.

Prussian blue walls, mosaic tiles and wooden accents set the “moodmood” for food at this new restaurant in Chinatown, which specialises in pasta, handmade fresh daily. From paccheri with lamb ragu to spaghetti cacio e pepe, fans of pasta will not be disappointed by the rich flavours and textures on the menu. The Italian casual dining concept also offers a decent selection of starters, mains and desserts for sharing, paired with curated seasonal wines, craft beers, or your choice of coffee or tea.

3. Luckbros Kopi

Fancy sipping coffee one minute and petting an adorable lamb the next? That’s possible at the latest Luckbros Kopi outlet (previously known as Luckin Kopi) in Kota Damansara. The two-in-one cafe and mini petting zoo is an ideal stop for animal lovers as entrance to the “pet safari” is free, so patrons can get up close and personal with rabbits, sheep, miniature horses, guinea pigs, and other furry creatures before or after their meal. Fret not, the cafe and zoo areas are kept separate, so diners can still enjoy the range of local food in peace and comfort, surrounded by verdant greenery.

Welcome to the dark side of Curio Coffee Roaster in Rivercity: Curio Dark, located at The Grange @ Ampwalk. Just opened in the last week of November, the coffee bar reflects its name in the form of sleek black interiors, inspiring curiousity as guests walk down a flight of stairs from a lush courtyard to reach the mysterious lower ground hideout—like yin and yang. The dim space reflects the brand’s experimental side, where coffee creations are blended with sake or whiskey. Aside from freshly brewed coffee and alcohol-laced concoctions, the second offshoot also offers savoury and sweet waffles.

5. Et cetera

Et cetera makes the list as yet another new place in town for handmade pasta, which started welcoming patrons barely days ago. Consider it the rebirth of Restart by Slo (formerly based in Kota Damansara), now calling a warm space with clean aesthetics and neutral tones in Bukit Jalil its home. The current soft-launch menu is modest but not short of options, including small plates, risotto, fettuccine, pappardelle, classic snacks and desserts.

Head on over to UpperDeck in Petaling Street for casual comfort food during the day or more upscale offerings in the evening. The unique hybrid concept recently opened its doors on the literal “upper deck” of a shophouse along the bustling street, featuring an understated dining atmosphere. Lunch options include an array of noodles, rice and protein-based dishes; whereas the dinner menu has a larger variety of fusion-style small and big plates as well as desserts for sharing.

Nestled in the Chow Kit neighbourhood, Kooky Plate makes its debut as the cousin of Kooky Cream, serving colourful dishes, desserts and drinks. The cosy restaurant is characterised by colourblocked blue and orange accents, contrasted against dark grey tiles and wooden furniture. Although cakes and desserts are the main highlights here, you can also find hot dishes including beef ramen, kimchi chicken quiche, and breakfast favourites.
