There’s no better way to celebrate Malaysia than with food. As a multicultural country, food has always been at the centre of all our celebrations, with every culture having its own specialties. This National Day and Malaysia Day, grab a friend or two to celebrate with you at these gastronomical affairs: 

 

1. MALAYSIA MAJESTY AFTERNOON TEA AT THE RUMA HOTEL & RESIDENCES

The RuMa Hotel and Residences is paying homage to our multicultural heritage with Malaysian Majesty, an afternoon tea featuring modern interpretations of traditional tea-time favourites. This sweet and savoury tea time treat is infused with an array of Malaysian flavours. Some of the dishes in this dining experience include otak-otak that’s elevated with Baerri Caviar, macarons filled with D24 durian cremeux, and tiramisu made with teh tarik. To top it all off, take a refreshing sip of the Tembikai Laici Gin cocktail or a Durian Belanda Sour mocktail.

2. MERDEKA MUHIBBAH SET DINNER AT JP TERES, GRAND HYATT KUALA LUMPUR

This six-course Merdeka Muhibbah dinner at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur celebrates the unity and rich flavours of Malaysia with the local way of life in mind. Take the delicate flavours of Putu Mayam, a traditional dessert made from rice flour and topped with grated coconut and gula melaka that symbolise the sweetness of the nation’s unity; or the rich blend of spices in the Daging Rusuk Berlado that represents the diversity of Malaysia’s cultural heritage.

3. MERDEKA MUNCHIES AT THE CHOW KIT HOTEL

A collaboration between The Chow Kit and Tao Bakes Cakes, Merdeka Munchies features a sweet and savoury spread. The meal starts off on a savoury note with a Beef Rendang Caesar Salad, Roti Jala, and Crispy Chicken and Dahl Wraps by The Chow Kit Kitchen, before ending with sweet treats from Tao Bakes Cakes. Think Malaysian-inspired desserts like Ais Kacang Eton Mess, or classics like hazelnut burnt butter cake, pistachio cake, lemon cake, and rose cake.

4. FLAVOURS OF FREEDOM OSUSUME AT NOBU KUALA LUMPUR

A gastronomic affair like no other, celebrate Malaysia with Nobu Kuala Lumpur’s special menu that displays an innovative take on local flavours. The Flavours of Freedom Osusume recreates the taste of Malaysia with dishes like red snapper with coriander dressing, which is a dish with thinly sliced succulent snapper topped with the freshest mangoes and cucumbers, hints of zesty coriander dressing, and freshly squeezed calamansi. The explosion of flavours doesn’t stop there—bite into a juicy Sabah slipper lobster with a crunchy soba tostada and velvety smooth edamame hummus.

5. TASTE OF MALAYSIA AT SHANGRI-LA KUALA LUMPUR KUALA LUMPUR

Enjoy a taste of Penang right in the city at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur. Step into a space that mimics the streets of the Pearl of the Orient with dedicated stalls serving a variety of dishes like lobak, savoury Hokkien mee, and delicious oyster omelettes. Every dish was carefully curated by esteemed chefs, Chef Khor and Chef Zakry, from Rasa Sayang Resort and Golden Sands Resort.

6. MALAYSIAKU: CULINARY TALES OF FOLKLORE & FABLES AT THE ST REGIS KUALA LUMPUR KUALA LUMPUR

The Malaysiaku dining experience is an annual affair by The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur. This immersive culinary journey has a different theme each year that pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of this country. This year, the theme is Culinary Tales of Folklores and Fables, where the chefs have taken inspiration from stories like Puteri Santubong and Puteri Sejinjang, Kisah Itik Bertelur Emas, and more. Each dish is thoughtfully curated with distinct flavours and traditional cooking techniques from every state.

7. PERANAKAN DELIGHTS AT SUNWAY RESORT HOTEL

8. MALAYSIAN-INSPIRED BURGERS GALORE AT MANDARIN ORIENTAL KUALA LUMPUR

In the spirit of patriotism, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur has collaborated with burger connoisseur, myBurgerLab, for a collection of Malaysian-inspired gourmet burgers. This collaboration sees chefs from both establishments working together to create burgers that highlight various flavours that can be found in our country.

If you want a refreshing bite, try the Water Balloon burger that features myBurgerLab’s charcoal bun topped with a signature sauce, mixed greens, grilled watermelon, chopped lychee, and a 150g Australian beef patty. Craving for something spicy instead? Then choose between the Mala Nashville fried chicken burger that has a large butterflied fried chicken breast topped with a Mala, honey, and butter sauce, then garnished with cili padi infused pickles, and asam boi pickled onions; or bite into the Burger Daging Berlado that features a fluffy bun with cucumber slices, eggplant, sambal belado, salted egg mayo, ulam raja, and an Australian 150g beef patty. For non-beef eaters, there’s the Lamb and Mint burger that is made with a 150g lamb patty, topped with grilled artichoke, sundried tomatoes, romaine lettuce, sheep ricotta cheese and a Tzatziki sauce.
