5 Fun cafes with unique concepts that will bring out your inner child

It’s normal to get excited over entering an aesthetic-looking cafe that promises good food, but what about cafes that capture the nostalgia and memories of your childhood? Below, we’ve gleaned five cafes around KL with concepts that will make you feel giddy with joy and excitement, like a child in a toy store.

Happy Landfill

Located in Kota Damansara, this quirky office-themed cafe is the dream of any ’90s child that grew up in the era of GameBoys and chunky PC desktops. Every corner of this cafe is perfect for an Instagram photoshoot as it’s decorated with all sorts of retro tech paraphernalia. You can even play vintage games with their gaming consoles hooked up on static TVs for that Stranger Things vibe. Sit on one of their office desks, complete with a floppy disk player and wire-coiled telephones, while sipping on their freshly brewed coffee or craft beer. Alternatively, Happy Landfill also serves rice bowls and desserts if you want to go for a heartier meal. We have a feeling that you’ll be busy snapping pictures rather than eating though.

Fujiwara Tofu Shop

One would never guess that a humble tofu shop could be so decorated, but Fujiwara Tofu Shop takes it up several notches with its fun manga-inspired furnishings. Based on Initial D, it recreates the tofu shop seen in the famous manga and anime straight down to the awning at the cafe’s entrance with the exact car model the protagonist, Fujiwara, drives parked out front. Inside, customers can get fun with the decor as chairs take the form of real car seats and you can even play some car arcade racing. If you grew up loving anime and automobiles, this place is up your driveway. Be sure to try out their signature Homemade Black Tofu that’s crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Were you a child obsessed with your soft toys? Here’s a place to rekindle that love. With so many teddy bears of different shapes, sizes, and colours adorning every corner, this cafe and restaurant is ‘unbearably’ cute and bound to make your inner child giddy with joy. The fairy lights and white ceiling curtains also give the whole place an extra cosy feeling, reminiscent of bedroom forts and snuggle time with your favourite plushies. The menu at The Teddy is just as fun and adorable as every dish and drink comes with teddy bear designs on them! The main courses include a variety of pastas and burgers, whilst desserts come in the form of bear-shaped waffles and cakes, making it a great place for you and little children.

Homesick Alien

If you were more of the science kid who loved all things space-related, then this UFO-themed cafe is right up your alley. Homesick Alien landed on Earth in May of this year and brings the 1960s space-age nostalgia to patrons with its striking bright colours and extraterrestrial décor. The facade of the cafe is also characterised by spherical chairs and wall bubble panels that will make you think you just stepped into a Hollywood sci-fi set. Further, a signature at Homesick Alien is their UFO burgers (yes, you read that right) which are burgers encased in a bun to look like flying saucers. As they are fairly new, there are only five burger options available. However, they also offer a variety of snacks such as wedges and fries, along with artisanal drinks and coffee. This cafe is also halal-friendly and pork-free.

Now it’s time to head back down to Earth and be transported to Japan. This is a hidden gem right in the heart of Subang Jaya that is the perfect after-work or after-school hangout spot. Inspired by ‘80s and ‘90s Japanese aesthetics, patrons can visit this thrift store cum cafe to enjoy some pre-loved shopping or burgers and butterbeer (or both). Once you step through the neon-lit entrance, head to the classroom that works as the lounge area where you can scribble on chalkboards and desks—this time you won’t get punished by your teachers.
