Afternoon Tea in KL: The latest menus and the best spots

With dine-ins allowed again, it’s time to blow off some steam and enjoy a quiet afternoon—with an elegant and scrumptious afternoon tea! There’s something about it that most Malaysians (or people, in general!) enjoy. Perhaps it’s the love for bite-sized treats of both savoury and sweet varieties. Or the beautiful display or chinaware it comes in. Or the peaceful and carefree ambience that often acts as the backdrop. Or the hours spent just chatting away with a loved one, accompanied by a generous and gorgeous afternoon tea tray. Whichever it is, we’ve listed some of the latest (and best) afternoon tea menus in KL that you can try. If you’re not comfortable with dining out yet, fret not, as some of these places offer takeaway and delivery too!

1. Shiseido-inspired Sakura Spring Afternoon Tea

When: Till 30 April 2021

Time: 3pm – 5pm

Where: Altitude, Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur

Price: RM148 nett per person*

*Inclusive of a Shiseido White Lucent sampling kit worth RM65 and a Shiseido voucher worth RM50

*Add RM40 per person to include a glass of Cherry Blossom sake

There are a few ways to celebrate the season of cherry blossom without hopping on a plane to Japan. Find the tecoma trees, a.k.a the Malaysian equivalent, around KL for an Instagram-worthy shot, or indulge in a Hanami Bento Box with desserts inspired by the cherry blossom. In collaboration with Shiseido, the menu features mouthwatering delights such as Salmon & Avocado Tartar, Baby Octopus Tempura, Fried Wild Yam with Miso Paste, Crab Mayonnaise Maki Roll, Ichigo Tart & Verine, and Shiseido Macaron & Madeleine. The tantalising afternoon tea is paired with gourmet coffee options by illy Caffè and exquisite teas by Harney & Sons. Food aside, you’ll also be treated to an amazing view of the Kuala Lumpur cityscape.

2. Afternoon Tea with EP Yaying

When: Till 30 May 2021

Time: 3pm – 6pm, Fri – Sun

Where: The Librari, The RuMa Hotel and Residences

Price: RM150 per person*

*Every diner will receive a complimentary EP Yaying chinoiserie scarf worth RM1,000 as well as EP Yaying cash vouchers to be used at the store in Suria KLCC

EP Yaying is one of China’s top fashion labels and is also the latest inspiration for the afternoon tea at The RuMa Hotel and Residences. “Working with EP Yaying allowed us to be a bit more creative with our approach to the Afternoon Tea menu. We wanted to ensure the menu is a contemporary take on Chinese cuisine, while keeping it light and presentable for an Afternoon Tea session at the Librari,” says Executive Chef Tyson Gee. True enough, the afternoon tea menu is unlike any with petite fours such as Osmanthus and Peach Entremet, Tofu Almond Cheesecake and Lychee Rose Meringue Tartelette. Meanwhile, the savoury portion of the menu includes Barbecue Chicken Bun and Vol au Vent with Caviar. And to truly complete the experience, diners can opt from a selection of herbal, floral and Chinese tea.

3. Noritake x Celest Thoi Afternoon Tea

When: 15 March – 31 May 2021

Time: 2.30pm – 6pm, Mon – Sat | 3pm – 6pm, Sun

Where: Lounge on the Park, Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur

Price: RM158 per person, with free flow of hot beverages for up to two hours

One is a notable name for fine chinaware. The other is a crowd-favourite local designer, especially for her feminine and classic style. What do Noritake Japan and Celest Thoi have in common? One word: elegance. And that sheer elegance has been interpreted into a chinaware set designed by Celest Thoi—a first in her books! She’s also the first designer outside of Japan to be commissioned by Noritake. Delicate and beautiful flowers adorn the fine ‘canvases’, be it across the plates, cups or saucers; aesthetics aside, Thoi selected every flower for its symbolism. Buttercups for charm and attractiveness. Lupine for happiness, creativity and imagination. Hypericum for protection and rebirth.

To commemorate this unique collaboration, Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur’s Pastry Chef Suzana Anwar and her team have created an equally special afternoon tea menu that’s served on the Noritake x Celest Thoi chinaware itself. Be instantly transported to Japan with some familiar nuances such as the BBQ eel with soba noodle on a charcoal bun (our personal favourite!), Japanese-style chicken salad on green tea bread and an egg sandwich. For those with a sweet tooth, be delighted with artistic desserts such as the sakura blossom yoghurt milk pudding, mochi snow skin raspberry cheesecake and more. It’s an afternoon tea we’ll go back for again—and again.

You can check out the full Noritake x Celest Thoi collection on Artelia or Zalora.

When: 15 March – 31 May 2021

Where: The Drawing Room, The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur

Inspired by the fresh, floral notes of ‘Caroline’s Four Hundred’—the distinct scent used in every St. Regis around the world—Executive Pastry Chef Gael Moutet’s new Afternoon Tea menu skillfully layers flavours and textures. You’re most welcome to another helping of moreish quiche—a crowd favourite—from a premium selection of free-flow canapést, but do save space for scones and dessert.

The finest ingredients bring out the best of Chef Moutet’s European and Japanese techniques. Our favourites: La Pomme, a refreshing calamansi and apple creation with a delicate crunch, and the Chocolate Praline Cake featuring decadent gianduja (a traditional Italian take on Nutella) balanced with hazelnut and bitter dark chocolate.
