Malaysia's "sakura": Where to see the most beautiful tecoma blooms online and IRL—from KL to Kedah
Para para tecoma
The combination of an international travel ban and prime weather conditions has made a certain tree this week’s viral sensation. Known locally as “tecoma” and “Malaysian sakura”, the trees are currently in full bloom, lining city streets and parks with beautiful pink and white flowers.
When it's windy or starts to rain, the flowers fall like sakura too, creating a dreamy “rain shower” and carpeting the ground with petals. Blooming one or two times a year during the hot and dry season—no wonder our skin is more dehydrated these days—the flowers have a tissue-like texture.
Although we call these flowers “pink tecoma”, did you know that these aren’t strictly tecoma trees but Tabebuia rosea? Tecoma actually refers to another plant in the same family, which has bright yellow flowers. But can we just stick to “pink tecoma” which is so much easier to say and to remember?
To find the best virtual and IRL hanami spots, we’ve scoured Instagram to find the prettiest blooms in KL, Selangor, Penang, Melaka, Johor and Kedah.
