Malaysia’s 64th Independence Day is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate the occasion than how we Malaysians know best? After all, food has and always will be part of our culture and heritage, which we’re thankfully able to preserve and uphold ever since the first cry of “Merdeka!” by our forefathers.

It’s our diverse and unique cuisines that make us a “foodie nation”, so let’s eat to that with these Merdeka-inspired menus for August to September 2021.

1. Taste of Home by Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur

Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur’s Executive Sous Chef Budiman and his culinary team have prepared a plethora of set menus designed to remind you of home—if home means having classic Malay dishes on the dining table. Think all-time-favourites such as Ikan Pelangi Panggang Sos Masam Manis, Daging Pesamah Kerisik,and Ayam Rose Kasturi Haruman Saderi Kacang Badam. Alternatively, try his specially crafted Next Level Nasi Lemak that’s served with a whole Sabah lobster coated in his tangy sambal sauce, crispy deep-fried tiger prawns, black Angus beef rendang, and truffled eggs.

Journey through all 14 states in Malaysia while learning about the different rites of passage and traditional rituals of a Malay wedding with St Regis Kuala Lumpur’s Malaysiaku menu. The six-course menu consists of dishes like Keropok Lekor (Terengganu), Bidor Duck (Perak), Kerabu Sotong (Kelantan), and Biryani Gam Rice (Johor), among other beautifully crafted creations.

Li Restaurant has curated a special menu inspired by the elements and flavours of a popular Malaysian dish: satay. Made for sharing, the FamiLi meals feature modern Malaysian dishes such as slow-cooked pork shoulder (marinated in peanut chilli sauce), cucumber pineapple salad, and Langit glutinous rice seri muka, with an assortment of kuih as the optional add-on.

Don’t be mistaken—Knowhere’s Pizza Kantoi series aren’t really pizzas, but lookalikes with a Malaysian twist. Hence the “kantoi” part of the name, which refers to the Malaysian slang meaning “oops, you caught us red-handed!” Like pizzas, the dishes are actually Malaysian pies that come with toppings that are customisable to your liking. The six unique flavours in the series are each inspired by a perennial favourite Malaysian dish, such as Oh So Lemak (nasi lemak), Satay No Sorry (satay), and Biryani Fefeeling (biryani rice).
