6 Reasons why Rimowa’s 2019 luggage collection is the best one yet

When it comes to the best travel luggages, Rimowa is definitely one of the first few brands that come into mind. But aside from its rich history (the German brand was founded in 1898), it’s how it strives to remain culturally relevant, especially ever since co-chief executive Alexandre Arnault’s took the helm in 2017. The products and the logo have gone through a redesign and new category is introduced, but the thing that put them on every single millennial’s radar, was no doubt the collaborations with big fashion labels such as Supreme, Fendi, Off-White, and most recently, Dior. Rimowa has, no doubt, gone through a very successful brand realignment.

We were recently at the brand’s first Asia regional press presentation in Hong Kong, and got to take a closer look at some of the most exciting updates of the year. Here’s everything you need to know about Rimowa’s 2019 collection:

New colours

Rimowa’s luggage collection is typically available in aluminium or polycarbonate and in up to seven colours such as black, blue, green, red, silver, white, and aluminium. If you’re yearning for more options, the brand has unveiled a new collection of oh-so-colourful options, with four new shades added to the Essential Cabin, Essential Check-In L, and Essential Trunk Plus designs. The new shades include “Coral” which is inspired by Pink Lake in Western Australia; “Slate”, derived from Indonesian mines; “Sage”, which reflects the colour of the Lake District in Northwest England; and “Saffron”—the hue of Tuscany’s canola flower fields. The wheels aside, the colours cover the handle, zipper badge and wheel housing, giving it a monochrome look. Which is your favourite?

New sizes

A fan of the trunk rage but the size may be a little too big for a weekend getaway? Good news: The brand introduced Rimowa Trunk S—the smallest size in the line—that doesn’t compromise on the shape or the convenience. They are offered in classic silver, black and titanium.

Customisation and personalisation

Part of Rimowa’s charm is to see how each piece gets personalised according to the owner’s style, and this year, the brand is making that process that much easier with its own accessories and stickers. Three words: Unleash your creativity!

Give your plain suitcase that spruce-me-up with the array of belts, handles, wheels, tags and charms available.

An A to Z sticker book contains over 270 stickers in various designs and numbers from zero to nine, along with punctuation marks that will get your message across loud and clear.

A special-edition flag sticker collector’s box might also pique your interest. In it, find stickers from all 193 UN member states (that includes Malaysia).

With 95k followers on Instagram, multimedia artist Alex Israel—who recently unveiled his scarf collaboration with Louis Vuitton—is on a roll this year. Known for his use of colours, the cotton-candy hued Rimowa x Alex Israel collection featuring the Cabin Plus suitcases is the brand’s first-ever collection that uses a special colour-graded technique. Inspired by the LA sunset, the luggages are covered in shades of blue, light purple, pink and light orange—they’re truly the suitcase of summer.

Rimowa x Bang & Olufsen

Suitcases aside, the brand also unveiled its collaboration with Danish acoustic manufacturer Bang & Olufsen. The BeoPlay H9i headphones come with Rimowa’s signature aluminium case that will match your favourite suitcase, and they’re truly style and function in one. The campaign features award-winning producer Ludwig Göransson, who has composed for blockbusters such as Black Panther, Venom, and the Creed franchise.

Rimowa also continued to expand its offerings by launching a new line of iPhone cases. Design-wise, they don’t only follow the classic aluminium offerings. All three XR, XS and XS Max models are made from the same material, complete with a shockproof TPU perimeter band that enhances protection. If you prefer something cuter, there’s also a hard-shell transparent case with colourful stickers that emulate the luggage sticker designs.
