Paris Fashion Week SS18: Highlights of Day 8

Not one to shy away from OTT showspaces, this round, Chanel transformed the Grand Palais into the Gorges du Verdon, with 10-metre high waterfalls (six of them, no less) cascading under a boardwalk. To complement the aqua-themed wonderland, the colour palette sent down the runway was an iridescent mix of seafoam green and blue, with get-ups that radiate a more youthful vibe (to continue the year of the Gabrielle). An abundance of fringes were spotted on tweed tops, jacket and skirts, before the brand moved on with pops of watercolour prints and ruffles. Eye-catching organza skirts also made appearances, but it was the plastics that were the talking point of the day. PVC hats, hoods, capes, and boots (in various lengths) were accented with Perspex drop earrings and Camellia broch; chasing waterfalls has never looked this chic.

While Chanel’s SS18 looks may not be your typical everyday outfit, Miu Miu‘s ensembles were considerably more wearable, with a heavier dose of prints incorporated throughout the collection. Geek-chic separates such as chevron sweaters and geometric button-down shirts were paired with school-boy shorts, thigh-high socks and Oxford shoes; with a hint of bad-boy vibe in the form of sleeveless oversized checked shirts and mini sunglasses present. As the show went on, the boyish pieces were given a girlie juxtaposition with intricate lace frocks and floral-print numbers, layered on top of trousers and sweaters. Accessories wise, neon socks (worn with strappy sandals) and colourful basket bags will be a street style favourite, for sure.

Following the success of its Louis Vuitton X Supreme collaboration, it’s clear that creative director Nicolas Ghesquière is determined to keep the streetwear spirit alive for SS18. According to the show notes, “18th century French aristocratic garments” were the main inspiration behind the collection, and the references were apparent. Set in the medieval wing of the Louvre, aristocratic jacquard and embroidered details, pussy-bow silk shirts and ruffles were offset with sporty stripes and (orthopedic) basketball shoes, with pops of metallic and sequins served as a pick-me-up. Our favourite piece? The Stranger Things T-shirt that will help to keep our addiction under control—for now.
