Golden Globes 2025: Full winners list and highlights
A golden night
Breathtaking victories, surprise snubs, and expected wins—the 82nd Golden Globe Awards had it all! Taking place on 6 January at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, the night saw the biggest stars in film and TV gather to kickstart the Hollywood award show season with a bang.
All eyes are on the nominees and winners as they continue to shape up the contenders for the upcoming Oscars ceremony in March. Ahead, here are some of the biggest highlights from the night.
Emilia Pérez sings its way to the top
Emilia Pérez, a musical about a drug lord who undergoes gender-affirming surgery to live out her dream, emerged as the big winner of the night as it took home four awards, including Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy and Best Non-English Language Film.
The Brutalist closes the distance
Not to be left out, The Brutalist, a nearly four-hour historical epic following a Holocaust survivor’s journey to America to rebuild his life, led closely with three wins, receiving Best Motion Picture—Drama and Best Director for Brady Corbet while his leading star Adrien Brody received Best Actor.
It was a painful day for Anora fans
Since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2024, Anora has been the talk of the town. A doomed love story between a young sex worker and a Russian oligarch captivated audiences at the Croisette, effectively putting newcomer Mikey Madison on Hollywood’s ones-to-watch list. However, the Sean Baker feature ultimately left empty-handed despite leading with five nominations. As the winner of the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, this makes it the highest-profile film not to win any awards at the Golden Globes.
Demi Moore finally gets her due
It’s the biggest word-of-mouth hit to come out of the film festival circuits and Demi Moore is on everybody’s lips. The 62-year-old star was named the Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy for her role in the body horror comedy The Substance as a fading celebrity who takes a black-market drug to become a younger, more enhanced version of herself. Moore has become a heavy contender at the Oscars with her emotional and pitch-perfect speech. We’re here for the Demi Renaissance!
Unexpected wins kept things interesting
There were some plot twists that no one saw coming—this is Hollywood, after all! One of the biggest upsets of the night came from Fernanda Torres’ win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture—Drama for I’m Still Here. While it’s certainly a cause for celebration that she is the first Brazilian actress to win in this category, audiences were shocked that Torress managed to beat out Hollywood sweethearts Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) and Angelina Jolie (Maria).
It was a good day for independent filmmaking. In probably the biggest shock of the night, the indie animation movie Flow was named the Best Animated Picture over juggernauts Inside Out 2, The Wild Robot and Moana 2. The Latvian production follows a black cat that finds itself on a boat filled with other animals as their home is displaced by a great flood. We love a good story about an underdogcat!
Shōgun slices through its competition
Meanwhile, in TV, there’s one show that has been dominating the award shows and shows no signs of stopping. After making Emmy history with a record-breaking 18 wins, Shōgun emerged triumphant with four awards, recognising Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano in their respective categories and taking home Best TV Drama. The historical and political drama set in feudal Japan has received wide critical acclaim and renewed for a second season.
This is the second year with the Golden Globes’ new voting body after replacing the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Currently, its 300 votes are more racially diverse, coming from over 85 countries. Previously, the winners were decided by fewer than 100 members.
