Emmy Awards 2024: Full winners list and highlights
The best of TV
Expected victories, surprising wins and shocking snubs—the 76th Emmy Awards had it all! Held at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles and co-hosted by Dan and Eugene Levy, the prestigious awards night saw the best of the small screen gather to be honoured for their awe-inspiring performances.
As anticipated, FX’s Shōgun, a historical drama following a political battle set in feudal Japan, turned out to be the night’s dominant winner with a record-breaking total of 18 Emmy wins—the most for any TV series in one season. The series previously won 14 trophies at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and took home four awards at the 2024 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama and top individual acting awards for its two protagonists.
As only the second non-English language show to be nominated in the Outstanding Drama category (the first being Squid Game in 2022), Shōgun’s triumph at the Emmy Awards shows is a welcome breakthrough for foreign-language entertainment.
Significantly, the historical drama has brought much visibility and acknowledgement to Japanese actors. Namely, veteran Hiroyuki Sanada who won his first Emmy in his 60-year career. Newcomer Anna Sawai also took home her career-first Emmy. Both actors are the first Japanese performers to receive the award in their respective categories.
There were some slight disappointments, though, as Tadanobu Asano was surprisingly snubbed from the Outstanding Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of the cunning Yabushige while Comso Jarvis’ John Blackthorne missed out on a nomination.
Another series that was all the buzz this year when it premiered was Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. Created, written and starring Richard Gadd, the dark comedy series explores the actor and comedian’s real-life trauma with sexual abuse and being stalked by a woman for over four years. The show picked up four Emmys, which included Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actress, and Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series.
Perhaps the biggest and most surprising win of the night was when Hacks won best comedy over FX’s reigning winner, The Bear! As the record-holder for the most nominations for any comedy series in Emmy history in July, the culinary series was the heavy favourite to win. However, it was Hacks, a comedy-drama about a legendary comedian and a young writer, that had the last laugh.
That’s not to say that The Bear went home empty-handed. Star Jeremy Allen White continued his streak by winning his second consecutive Emmy for best comedy actor whilst best supporting actor and actress went to castmates Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas.
Without further ado, here is the full list of winners for the Emmy Awards 2024.
