Exclusive: How ‘Elle’ Recreated Elle Woods’s Iconic Wardrobe

Few characters have turned a colour into a cultural calling card quite like Elle Woods. When Legally Blonde burst onto screens, Elle’s wardrobe wasn’t just a collection of perfectly coordinated outfits, but a declaration of confidence, ambition, and unapologetic femininity. From her head-to-toe pink ensembles and fluffy accessories to her courtroom-ready tailoring, Elle’s wardrobe proved that looking fabulous and being formidable were never mutually exclusive.

Now, that instantly recognisable style is getting a new chapter in Prime Video’s Elle. The prequel series takes us back to a younger Elle Woods, before the Harvard halls and courtroom victories that cemented her status as a pop culture fashion queen.

But recreating the wardrobe of someone whose style is already considered iconic comes with its own set of challenges. Rather than merely recreating the looks audiences already love, it comes with understanding the person behind them.

To find out how the team captured the origins of a fashion icon in the making, we spoke with the Wardrobe Co-Heads behind the series, Sara Byblow and Sophie de Rakoff, about recreating Elle’s signature style, discovering her early fashion evolution, and bringing a new era of pink power to life.

What was the first conversation you had about defining young Elle Woods through her wardrobe?

“Our very first conversations centred around building out the world around Elle before we even touched a single piece of clothing. We wanted to understand what a 16-year-old Elle would be influenced by in 1995—what posters were on her bedroom walls, what music she listened to, and what pop culture she absorbed.

We talked a lot about how her wardrobe represents an unwavering optimism, finding inspiration in figures such as Goldie Hawn for her comedic energy and Claudia Schiffer for her classic modelling style.”

Elle already has a strong sense of style in Legally Blonde. For this prequel series, how did you shape her style evolution to what fans of the film have come to love?

“Because the film’s aesthetic is so iconic, we treated the series as a narrative bridge. We asked ourselves, “Okay, she ends up at Harvard in that immaculate wardrobe, but how did she get there as a teenager?”

In the series, her family relocates from her sunny Beverly Hills comfort zone to an overcast, grungy Seattle. This allowed us to show her style evolving as a “fish out of water.” We used changing textures and different depths of colour to mirror her growth, vulnerability, and resilience as she navigates high school.”

What elements of the iconic adult Elle Woods wardrobe felt essential to plant early, and which did you deliberately avoid?

“What we planted: Pink, of course! Pink is shorthand for Elle Woods. Her signature monochromatic pairing, perfectly styled blonde hair, and unapologetic accessories (like her hot-pink Sweet 16 dress and her bright pink umbrella) were essential.

“What we avoided: We deliberately avoided trying to make her a carbon copy of the movie version right away. We didn’t want to just “put a hat on a hat.” If a piece didn’t actively serve the teenage character or propel the specific 1995 high school narrative, we left it out. We also avoided making her look too polished or mature too early.”

What kind of details go into your mood board when shaping the wardrobe for different characters in the show?

“Our mood boards were a massive rabbit hole of ’90s nostalgia! We pulled and circled pages from early-90s issues of Runway and Cosmopolitan magazines. For Elle, the mood boards were packed with vibrant colours, textures, and references to the supermodel era.

Conversely, for the Seattle kids at Rainier West High, the mood boards were a sea of sludgy browns, greys, camo, band tees, and plenty of grunge-era flannel to create that sharp visual contrast.”

Was there a particular look from Legally Blonde that inspired an outfit in the series?

“While we wanted the series to stand on its own, we constantly drew from the spirit of the films. For example, the scene in the pilot where Elle steps out for her blowout Sweet 16 party pays direct homage to the iconic, bubbly opening energy of Legally Blonde. The hot pink mini dress with a large, shiny bejewelled bow in her hair was a direct nod to her cinematic roots, serving as a transitional “design torch” passed from the original film’s aesthetic to the prequel.”

For Elle, how do you honour the film’s iconic fashion legacy without making the costumes feel like imitation?

“The key was grounding the clothing in Lexi Minetree’s performance and the reality of being a 16-year-old. Lexi brought her own incredible essence to the character rather than doing an outright impression of Reese Witherspoon.

Because the costumes were tailored to her specific portrayal of teenage vulnerability and confidence, the clothes felt completely organic to her character’s journey rather than a costume imitation.”

Elle is set in 1995. The 90s fashion is still incredibly trendy today. Where did you source inspiration to recreate that nostalgic style so it felt tangible?

“We leaned heavily into archival research of the mid-’90s, looking at real teen styling, pop culture iconography of 1995, and fashion editorial spreads from that exact year.

However, we were very adamant from the beginning that Elle is not a documentary. We didn’t want to be rigidly boxed into historical rules; instead, we wanted to capture the feeling and tangible texture of the era through a stylised, heightened Legally Blonde lens.”

At the same time, how do you balance historical accuracy with making the clothes feel exciting for today’s audience?

“We balanced it by creating a hybrid wardrobe. We mixed genuine vintage pulls and archival ’90s finds with custom-made garments designed specifically for the cast, alongside contemporary pieces available right now that carry a nostalgic silhouette. Because ’90s trends are so circular and popular with today’s audience, blending modern tailoring with vintage elements naturally made the wardrobe feel both nostalgic and entirely fresh.”

In this younger version of Elle Woods, what does her fashion style reveal about her character?

“Her fashion highlights her absolute resilience and self-assurance. When she arrives at Rainier West High in Seattle wearing a baby-pink satin button-down dress and a pink umbrella, she is met with a sea of dull, grungy plaids and immediate judgment.

Her clothing reveals that she refuses to conform or dull her shine just to blend in. Even when she’s feeling vulnerable or out of place, her clothes reflect a grounded inner confidence and a refusal to sacrifice her true self to achieve success.”

How closely did you work with the production designer and cinematographer to ensure the costumes complemented the overall visual world?

“Extremely closely. The visual storytelling relies entirely on the contrast between L.A. luxury and Seattle grunge. We actually did specific camera and look tests with Lexi in her pink satin dress against the dull, grey school lockers and the background extras in dark plaids.

We had to work hand-in-hand with the cinematography and production design teams to ensure that Elle’s pinks popped perfectly against the overcast, sludgy palette of the Seattle sets without clashing or looking completely un-cinematic.”

Were there any vintage pieces or custom-made garments you’re especially proud of? Can you share some of the fashion brands featured in the show?

“We are incredibly proud of the custom Sweet 16 hot pink dress with the oversized bow from the first episode. It was the very first physical piece we worked on together, and we went through five different designs before finding the perfect one.

In terms of brands, the show features a fun mix of archival pieces, custom studio builds, and recognisable sporty/preppy staples like Lacoste (which we used for her chic green-and-white tennis skirt ensemble during the Episode 4 pep rally).”

Did you also involve Lexi Minetree in your discussions about Elle’s wardrobe?

“Absolutely. Wardrobe is a collaborative tool for an actor, and Lexi was heavily involved. Interestingly, Lexi and her red-carpet stylist, Molly Dickson, even carried this collaboration into the real world for the Elle press tour—sourcing pieces from Reese Witherspoon’s personal archives and paying homage to original film costumes (like a sequined Dolce & Gabbana dress from the 2001 movie’s fitting scene). Having Lexi so attuned to the fashion legacy made the on-screen fittings a joy.”

If young Elle Woods had access to today’s fashion trends, what do you think she’d be obsessed with and which do you think will not get her seal of approval?

“Obsessed with: She would completely embrace the current resurgence of Y2K hyper-feminine aesthetics, Barbiecore, oversized hair bows, and high-end designer matching sets.

No seal of approval: She would definitely not give her seal of approval to the ultra-minimalist, completely desaturated “sad beige” aesthetic or overly baggy, shapeless streetwear that hides someone’s personality. As Elle would say, anyone who thinks monochrome beige is the new pink is seriously disturbed!”

Apart from Elle, which other characters were fun to dress?

“Dressing Elle’s mother, Eva Woods (played beautifully by June Diane Raphael), was an absolute blast. She is a privileged, fabulous Beverly Hills busybody who refuses to let a move to Seattle ruin her style. Her high-glamour, luxury outfits provided a hilarious and wonderful contrast to the Pacific Northwest. It was also fun dressing Liz (Gabrielle Policano), whose style is the complete antithesis of Elle’s but brilliantly reflects her grounded, straight-shooter personality.”

Without spoilers, is there a costume moment later in the season that you’re especially excited for audiences to see?

“Without giving too much away, keep an eye out for how Elle handles school spirit events later in the season, particularly around the homecoming race. Watching her adapt her uncompromising style to fit into school themes—like swapping her pink for a forest green Lacoste tennis skirt or a chunky Rainier West sweater vest while still looking 100% Elle Woods—is a massive treat.”

Lastly, how has the experience been working on Elle and what do you hope audiences can look forward to in the show?

“It has been a dream come true. Immersing ourselves in the Legally Blonde universe and discovering just how many shades of pink exist in the world has made us fall in love with the colour all over it—it genuinely feels like a neutral to us now! We hope audiences look forward to a joyful, lighthearted, and visually vibrant escape that reminds everyone to feel proud of exactly who they are.”

Elle is available to stream on Prime Video.
