How to revive jet-lagged skin in five easy steps

Is the jet lag hitting your complexion hard? Here’s how to restore your skin’s radiance and bounce with just a few easy steps.

Jet-setting is fun, isn’t it? Nothing beats the feeling of going to bed in one country and waking up in another; the sheer euphoria of exploring another culture in the flesh. That is, of course, until you overdo it on the red-eyes and find yourself a sallow shell of a human being.

Travelling is fabulous until it starts taking a toll on your body. Believe it or not, constantly switching timezones can have some pretty dire effects—and most of them manifest on your skin. If you’ve been noticing some dryness, dullness, and general fatigue cropping up on your face, fret not—we’re here with a five-step solution to restore your skin’s vitality and reset the clock on your complexion.

Ahead, find our five steps to reincarnate your jet-lagged skin:

Step 1: Catch up on your beauty sleep

Unfortunately, no amount of skincare and makeup can replicate the healing powers of a good night’s sleep. While it can take a while to restore your sleep schedule, taking short naps throughout the day (read: No longer than 15 to 20 minutes!) can really help your body and skin to recover from the stresses of travelling.

Step 2: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Long-hauls on planes and constant travelling can take a serious toll on your skin’s hydration levels. As such, adding hydration back into your skin immediately upon arrival is essential. Whether you’re topping up with your favourite serum or you’re doubling down with your toner-moisturiser combo, keep an eye out for products with hydrating ingredients in them, such as hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, glycerin and the like.

Step 3: Go big on barrier repair

Whether you’re in the thick of a ski holiday in the Alps or you’re kicking it under the sun on the beach, any change in weather can cause damage to your skin barrier. As you likely know by now, an unhappy skin barrier is the root cause of virtually all your skin problems, from acne to inflammation and more.

So, when trying to restore your skin to its former, non-jetlagged glory, your focus should be on fortifying and restoring this skin barrier. This means adopting a skincare routine that helps with this process. Here’s what we suggest:

  1. Cleanse with a non-stripping acidic cleanser to prevent unnecessary irritation to the skin
  2. Exfoliate with a gentle manual scrub or chemical exfoliant to help aid in skin turnover
  3. Use a toner or essence that is rich in ceramides and hydrating ingredients to soothe your skin and restore hydration levels
  4. Add a strengthening boost into the mix with a peptide-infused serum and moisturiser combo
  5. Be diligent with your sunscreen (yes, even in winter climates!) to make sure you’re preventing further skin damage

Of course, the most important step is consistency—keep up this healing routine for as long as it takes for your skin to recover.

Step 4: Targeted skincare treatments

Now, given that your skin barrier has been through a lot with your travels, it probably means you’ve been showing some signs of fatigue. Breakouts, rosacea flare-ups and wrinkles are just the beginning (yay!). If you’re hoping to get your skin back into tip-top shape ASAP, make sure you’re spot-treating areas of concern with the right products.

Alternatively, you can cut out the guesswork and head to your nearest beauty salon for a full facial. Not only will your facialist be able to diagnose your skin issues more accurately, but they’ll be well equipped with everything you could possibly need to treat them.

Step 5: Tone up with devices

The easiest—and most fun—way to invigorate your jet-lagged complexion is with a luxurious facial workout. Now, while you could engage in some face yoga, we’d recommend taking the easy route with microcurrent devices. These devices are made to tone and lift the skin in just five to 10 minutes, giving you an instant lift and glow. The Foreo Bear, for instance, works by utilising both microcurrent and T-Sonic pulsations in tandem to boost circulation, smooth the skin and firm up sagging skin.
