In conversation with Lin Shiao Tung on reviving jade through contemporary styles

Jade is one of the most revered gems in the world, cherished throughout the ages as a precious symbol of purity, harmony and good fortune. In ancient China, this gemstone held such profound significance that it was often laid to rest alongside royalty. Today, jade is prized by people of all backgrounds as a lucky charm. Although many jewellers in Malaysia carry jade, none quite match the fusion of innovation and cultural revival embodied by Lin Shiao Tung

Hailing from Taiwan, the eponymous brand has been a leading presence in the jewellery industry for over three decades. What sets it apart is its unconventional designs, which not only modernise jade but also contribute to the restoration of its cultural importance, offering it as a vessel for the deep emotions of the East. Among its renowned collections are ‘Content with My Jade (隨玉而安)’, ‘The Messenger of Happiness(幸福青鳥)’, and the ‘Eric Jade Bear (陪伴玉熊)’.

Luckily, there’s no need to journey all the way to Taiwan as Lin Shiao Tung’s boutique now graces Eslite Spectrum, The Starhill in Kuala Lumpur. This expands its reach beyond cities like Hong Kong, Beijing and Suzhou, boasting over 12 stores in total. Earlier this month, Lin travelled to the capital city with two esteemed master jewellers to unveil its latest campaign, ‘The Messenger of Happiness: Sculpting With Love.’ Attendees were treated to an immersive workshop exploring the intricate art of jade carving, fostering a deeper appreciation for the exquisite blend of tradition and innovation.

Following the intimate workshop, we had a quick chat with Lin Shiao Tung about his inspirations, future plans and more.

Lin Shiao Tung

Describe Lin Shiao Tung jewellery in three words.

“Artistry, craftsmanship, and happiness.”

Can you tell us what is your source of inspiration?

“I am mostly inspired by my family. For instance, the ‘Messenger of Happiness’ collection is inspired by my son. During one bedtime story session, as I read  the European fairy tale ‘Bluebird’ to him—a story of two siblings on a quest for happiness—he asked a simple yet profound question: “Dad, what is happiness?” It was then that I realised the answer right in front of me—the few minutes spent reading stories to my children are some of the happiest moments in my life.”

What is your favourite collection, and why?

“The ‘Messenger of Happiness’ collection holds a special place in my heart because it reminds me of wonderful times spent with my family.”

What has been the most memorable experience you’ve had with a customer so far?

“I remember a client sharing with me the nostalgic connection he felt to the ‘Jade Bear’ piece, as it brought back memories of his childhood. He fondly remembered his father taking him to the night market in the park every Friday, where he would always receive a balloon. It fills me with joy to know that my work serves as an emotional anchor for others, becoming important companions and guardians in their lives. Knowing that my designs can capture the precious memories held within others’ hearts brings me deep satisfaction.”

What are some of the challenges faced by Lin Shiao Tung jewellery in Malaysia?

“One of the biggest challenges we face is meeting the diverse demands of the local market. With its rich cultural diversity, everyone holds unique preferences in jewellery design hence our goal is to accommodate this wide range of tastes and requirements. Also, given the presence of numerous established homegrown and international brands in the market, our brand needs time to cultivate a distinctive identity and formulate strategies that will attract consumers effectively.”

What’s next for the brand?

“Now that we’ve extended our presence beyond the Chinese market and launched our first store in Kuala Lumpur, marking our entry into Southeast Asia, our objective is to engage with global audiences on a much broader scale.”

What do you want people to associate or remember your brand with?

“I want people to associate my brand with quality craftsmanship and a strong sense of heritage. I hope the customers will see my brand not just as a purveyor of fine jewellery, but as a curator of meaningful, personal stories that can be worn and cherished. Each piece is designed to evoke memories, celebrate moments, and become integral to the wearer’s identity. Ultimately, I aim for the brand to be seen as a bridge between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, offering unique, timeless pieces that honour the past while embracing modern aesthetics.”
