Volvo: Everything you need to know bout the all-new S60 T8 CKD

As Malaysians continue to follow the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) amid COVID-19 concerns, we can now begin to notice examples of the “New Normal”. Virtual events are starting to take over physical events, as seen with the recent digital launch (watch here) of the Volvo S60 T8 CKD. The need to practise social distancing isn’t about to take away Malaysians’ affinity for all things automotive.

Only available in the T8 R-Design trim, the Volvo S60 T8 now comes as a Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) unit for the Malaysian roads. It is powered by the T8 Twin Engine e-AWD plug-in hybrid—translating into a zero to 100 kilometres per hour run in 4.4 seconds. This is made possible with the existence of the electric motor and its Drive-E petrol engine (equipped with supercharger and turbocharger technology).

As for the S60 T8 CKD’s interior, one can expect a complete Scandinavian aesthetic. The contoured seats come in Charcoal Fine Nappa Leather with Open Grid Textile upholstery. In addition to a tailored dashboard, there is also the 14-speaker system that’s powered by Harman Kardon. The speaker system is linked to a Sensus Connect infotainment system—compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

On the outside, you’ll notice the sculpted sides and muscular shoulders above the rear wheels as well as a prominent front grille. One can also spot the full LED headlights with Volvo Cars’ T-shaped light signature.

When it comes to safety, these are some important features to note. First of all, the City Safety with Autobrake technology engages auto-braking to allay collisions. This is said to be the first in the world for the mid-size sedan segment. Next, supporting the driver with steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads up to 130 kilometres per hour is the Pilot Assist System. Others include Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, and Cross Traffic Alert.

Did you know that Volvo is the first car manufacturer to use blockchain technology to monitor and trace cobalt throughout the supply line? This actually helps with the responsible sourcing of the battery packs used in the S60 T8 CKD. The “New Normal” will see the automotive industry here in Malaysia and around the world making necessary changes—and a virtual launch of the latest car is just one example.

The Volvo S60 T8 CKD (priced at RM282,540) is available in four colour options. They are Crystal White Pearl, Fusion Red Metallic, Onyx Black Metallic, and Pebble Grey Metallic. In adherence to the government’s advice on social distancing, Volvo Car Malaysia will be making online bookings possible. What are your thoughts on Volvo’s freshest addition to its portfolio?
