The all-new line-up of Mercedes-AMG compact cars has arrived—here’s what you need to know

The COVID-19 pandemic has had major impacts on many industries all over the world—from restaurants to hotels to automotive. However, that hasn’t halted Mercedes-Benz‘s objective to always push forward as a brand with an extensive legacy. In the midst of the global health crisis and Conditional Movement Control Order (slated to end on 9 June 2020), the German luxury automaker revealed their latest offerings in Malaysia online, instead of the usual physical affair. In fact, they will also be moving customer experiences from offline to online.

Entering the “New Normal” with a massive bang, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has brought three new Mercedes-AMG models into the country. They are the AMG A 35 Edition 1, AMG CLA 45 S Coupé, and AMG A 45 S Edition 1.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Edition 1

Representing an ideal point of entry to the world of Mercedes-AMG, this new hatchback is said to offer absolute peak performance. The variant is available in metallic denim blue with decals in matte Tech Gold on the exterior mirror caps as well as in the lower part of the doors.

The Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Edition 1 is powered by the two-litre four cylinder turbo engine—with the ability to go from zero to 100 kilometres per second in 4.7 seconds. It has a top speed of 250 kilometres per hour. That’s pretty impressive. In addition to the AMG Speedshift DCT 7G transmission, the model also comes with the AMG Performance 4MATIC variable all-wheel drive. Hence, drivers can expect better grip and driving pleasure.

Let’s have a look at its exterior. For improved driving dynamics, the vehicle weight is reduced by the crankcase made of high-strength, lightweight die-cast aluminium.

You will be able to notice some distinguishing characteristics at the front of the vehicle. They include the radiator grille with twin louvres, silver chrome trims on the louvres in the outer air intakes, the AMG Line front apron with flics on the air intakes, and a front splitter.

As for the wheels, the Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Edition 1 comes equipped with 19-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels. On the inside, drivers can expect a true racecar feel with the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather and AMG Performance seats.

The Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Edition 1 is priced at RM379,888.

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+

With the ability to reach the century sprint in 3.9 seconds (and top speed of 270 kilometres per hour), the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ is equipped with the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine manufactured for series production.  The power pack is produced on the “One Man, One Engine” principle.

For improved agility and dynamics, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ is equipped with the eight-speed AMG Speedshift DCT 8G dual-clutch transmission. Expect shifting between gears to be optimised.

An interesting feature in this variant is AMG Torque Control in the new rear axle differential. This provides optimum traction—especially in adverse road conditions and during extreme cornering manoeuvres. Here’s how: the drive power can be completely variably distributed between the front and rear wheels as well as selectively between the left and right rear wheel.

Designed for those obsessed with performance and power, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ comes with the AMG-specific radiator grille with a wider lower contour and twelve vertical louvres. Moreover, you might notice that the front section has been visually lowered by the flat bonnet with powerdomes. You also can’t miss the 19-inch AMG five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels with red painted brake calipers.

Another unique component is the new Multibeam LED headlamps. Drivers will enjoy attractive design by day and brighter illumination by night. You can also control the LEDs by switching between low, partial, and main beam automatically—with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus.

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ is priced at RM459,888.

Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC+

Similar to the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+, this variant is also equipped with the new power pack produced with the “One Man, One Engine” principle in Affalterbach. It has a top speed of 270 kilometres per hour and can go from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 4.0 seconds.

Available in the model (and the other two as well) is the virtual race engineer, AMG Track Pace. Part of the MBUX infotainment system, AMG Track Pace continuously monitors more than 80 vehicle-specific data when negotiating a race circuit. Data can be utilised to improve and analyse driving skills. Moreover, you can record your own circuits as well as switch between 2D and 3D map displays.

Many of its features are similar to the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+. This model comes equipped with red painted brake callipers, 19-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels, Multibeam LED, and Burmester surround sound system. There is also a wireless charging system for mobile devices.

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ is priced at RM448,888.

The launch of these three new variants in Malaysia is Mercedes-Benz’s response to the increased demand of compact cars in the country. Which of the trio is your favourite: A 35 4MATIC, A 45 4MATIC+, or CLA 45 4MATIC+? Don’t be shy—you are allowed to choose all of them.
