Fresh off its opening week in late May, Bol offers a modern, original twist on Peranakan cuisine in a casual dining setting. Located along Jalan Sin Chew Kee, the restaurant is set to become a hotspot for shutterbugs with its lush, Instagram-worthy aesthetic. A predominantly green colour palette sets the tone, with floral wallpaper and rattan furniture completing the modern setting. The dishes on the menu appear just as photogenic, with fine options such as rojak tart, sea bass kapitan, and lamb shank hangus to please fans of Nyonya food.

Address: 15, Jalan Sin Chew Kee, Bukit Bintang, 50150 Kuala Lumpur

Afloat Coffee Roaster is the latest addition to Bukit Jalil’s growing cafe scene, founded by an experienced barista couple. Tucked on the second floor overlooking a verdant view of the neighbourhood park, the minimalist cafe welcomes customers for coffee in a warm, serene space. The micro roastery offers in-house roasted single-origin coffee, as well as a range of classic and exclusive pastries in collaboration with another popular local artisanal bakery, dou dou bake.

3. Olivia Deli Bangsar

Up until March this year, Olivia Deli operated only at Tiffin Food Court—where it gained a steady stream of customers for its paellas. Behind the scenes, the team had been working on the opening of their deli shop at APW Bangsar, which officially opened for walk-ins in May. Expect an open-air space with beautifully painted wall tiles, tall counter seats, and hanging light fixtures that could easily be mistaken for straw hats. Aside from the usual cold cuts and cheese you’d find at any deli, the space serves Southern European sharing plates—and a mean jug of sangria.

After establishing its online store in 2020, Boink Bakery has now bounced into a physical store in Puchong. The bright new bakery cafe features a facade made completely of glass, allowing customers to peek at the open concept kitchen and cosy setup within. Step inside to order freshly baked breads and pastries including sourdough, croissants, focaccia, soft rolls, and cookies. Takeaways are popular, especially paired with white or black coffee; but there are also seats to accommodate small groups for a chat over a cuppa Joe.

Bangkok’s Baan PhadThai opened its first restaurant in KL in mid-April, bringing its take on the world-famous Thai noodle dish to our shores after launching outlets in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Having earned the coveted Bib Gourmand by Michelin Guide Bangkok for five years in a row from 2018 until 2022, the brand prides itself in consistently serving highly rated phadthai. The secret lies in a special 18-ingredient sauce cooked together with quality “Sen Jan” rice noodles. Interior-wise, the pork-free KL outpost exudes a Thai street-food ambience with its bright blue hue and wood-shuttered windows alongside Thai vintage paintings and photos.

7. Rust KL Cafe

Chinatown welcomes yet another cafe in the form of Rust KL, a double-storey space that reflects the rustic side of the neighbourhood. Like many other establishments in the vicinity, the building was formerly a brothel before it was converted into what it is today: a place that serves pastas and cafe staples with a Malaysian twist. Think dishes like Tiger Prawn Masak Merah with Saffron Risotto and Sloppy Joe filled with mutton varuval. Slivers of the building’s past are retained, however, as given by the stripped-back walls and exposed bricks. Other parts are still a work in progress, including an upstairs bar which is slated to open soon.
