#CheatDayEats: Nasi Lemak

Nasi lemak is quintessential to the Malaysian diet, and a breakfast staple for many (me included). It is pretty much the unofficial national dish here, and that is saying a lot considering how much we Malaysians take pride in our food. Thus, for this week’s cheat day, we round up some of the best places to get your nasi lemak fix:

1. Nasi Lemak Famous

Nestled within the Bangsar Selera Food Court and under a red tent is where you will find this old crowd favourite. Nasi Lemak Famous keeps its regulars coming back with its signature ayam goreng rempah—fresh, warm and nicely seasoned, it goes well with the sambal, which boasts a natural sweetness that is known to be extracted from onions rather than sugar. Other sides include sambal paru, rendang daging, fried tempe and begedil, making it hard to resist from piling up that plate.

2. Nasi Lemak Bumbung

A popular late night haunt, this nasi lemak stall finds home in the back alley behind Maybank in Seapark. Service here is fast and furious, in a good way, as orders are pretty standard. You’ll get your nasi lemak within minutes, sometimes even seconds. Many hold high praise for their sambal, which is of the sweet kind and just mildly spicy, but I’m all for the ayam goreng—deliciously tender with a hint of turmeric that reminds one of the addictive muruku snack.

3. Village Park Restaurant

It wouldn’t be a proper list without Village Park in the mix. Often dubbed the best nasi lemak in KL, the rice is perfectly fluffy and aromatic, the ayam goreng delightfully crispy and fragrant, and service is always top notch. If one doesn’t feel like having ayam goreng, there are plenty of other equally good sides to choose from too. Although prices here are on the slightly steeper side of the spectrum (for nasi lemak), but it is well worth it as you can always trust them to be consistent with quality.
