Chinese New Year 2021: 4 Local designers’ collections to shop this year

Following the rise in COVID-19 cases nationwide, Prime Minister Muhyiddin has announced that all social activities including gatherings during Chinese New Year will not be allowed. That said, although the festivities will be a different one this year, that isn’t stopping us from getting into the Lunar New Year spirit, and we’re doing it the best way we know how: dressing up!

Ahead of February 12, well-loved local brands including Innai Red, Khoon Hooi, Brian Khoo, and Melinda Looi have all launched their Chinese New Year collections. Check them out below:

Innai Red

Innai Red’s 2021 Chinese New Year collection marks the brand’s fourth collection in a row, and this year, the line is inspired by the beauty and energy of one of Kuala Lumpur’s most emblematic landmarks—Chinatown.

Traditional attire including qipao and cheongsam are given a modern update, be it in midi or mini lengths, with cap or puff sleeves, and in form-fitting or wrapped silhouettes. Staying true to its aesthetic, the feminine pieces are finished off with intricate details including 3D floral embroidery, beadwork, buttons with tassels, and more.

Khoon Hooi

Khoon Hooi has also launched its Chinese New Year 2021 collection, and the bespoke line, in particular, features 14 different traditional elements that let you fully embrace your heritage. Some of the notable designs include a cap-sleeve brocade qipao with a high Mandarin collar, a halter-neck dress that’s reminiscent of the dudou (the traditional bodice), and a Mandarin-collar coat dress that’s embellished with butterfly buttons.. Modern pieces such as a cropped top and pleated maxi skirt co-ords and a qipao with bell sleeves are also available.

Like the year before, the brand also introduced a ready-to-wear capsule line that comprises two tops, two dresses, and a pair of culottes.

Brian Khoo

This year, designer Brian Khoo takes inspiration from chinoiserie décor for his Lunar 2021 collection. Natural landscapes, lush garden vignettes, and blossom prints lend a chic and dainty touch to the array of looks that are crafted from satins and crepes. To amp up the oriental flair, a number of pieces are lined with gold piping details that pay homage to the Japanese Kintsugi (golden repair in English) technique. Aside from womenswear, a selection of menswear and childrenswear are also available.

The collection is also extra special this year, as the brand has collaborated with Talee Studio on a series of knot earrings that perfectly complements the traditional ensembles.

Melinda Looi

Launched as a part of her Cruise 2021 collection, Melinda Looi’s Chinese New Year 2021 pieces, entitled Péngyou, is an ode to friendship. And in these trying times, it cannot be any more appropriate.

The bright and vivid line comprises cheongsam that comes in a myriad of fabrics and prints, humid weather-friendly top-and-shorts set, and cape dresses with mandarin collar that gives the traditional ensemble a dressier take. A fun suggestion? Layering a chiffon skirt over your cheongsam to switch things up.
