Bags—except for backpacks—have always taken a backseat when it comes to men’s fashion, but all these changed when Kim Jones sent his iteration of Dior’s Saddle bags down the runway at his debut SS19 show. 19 years after the iconic piece first made its appearance at the women’s Spring/Summer 2000 RTW show, the re-envisioned arm candy has set the internet abuzz with the new designs. Available in the form of backpacks, belt bags, clutches and more, let’s just say the guys won’t be the only ones who will be seen toting the collection.
“The Saddle has a casual look. We gave it a new masculine interpretation, like the shoulder bag that provides a very interesting gaucho look.” — Kim Jones
Unlike the ladies’ line, there’s something about the men’s designs that exude that extra edge. Could it be the jacquard strap adorned with a ‘Christian Dior’ inscription? The industrial metal ‘CD’ buckle designed by Matthew Williams (aka the founder of streetwear label, Alyx)? Or the new materials, from grained calfskin and satin-finish crocodile to a classic favourite, the Dior Oblique canvas? Either way, these are just some of the many details that we just can’t seem to get enough of. If our recent observation is of any indication, expect to see more men in (Saddle) bags on the streets from now on. They’re definitely as lust-worthy as when we first spotted them.
