Shoulders reigned on the runways at Givenchy and Balenciaga AW19

Givenchy

Who: Star wattage on the front row include Gal Gadot, Rebel Wilson, Rosamund Pike, Lewis Hamilton, Sam Smith and Rainie Yang among the few.

Where: The Jardin de Plantes served as an apt location for the show's "Winter of Eden" theme.

The low-down: You can always count on Clare Waight Keller for her exquisite hand in tailoring. While the collection's name alluded to a somewhat verdant notion, she didn't make it overtly obvious. It started off with a solid lineup of coat-dresses, jackets, and blazers—sporting strong shoulders, some rounded, mostly with wide lapels, and all clinched by the waist. The floral touches came along by the ninth look—plissé dresses with frilly wave-like cuffs and collars, in 3D-esque botanical motifs inspired by Japanese vases. And to complete the collection, a handful of red-carpet ready looks for her celeb clientele; one of it a gown decked with silver adornments, paired with a bolero jacket with voluminous, crinkled taffeta sleeves. What a way to make an exit.

Buro loves: Utterly chic, double-breasted tuxedos with satin lapels that oozed #BossGirl.

Balenciaga

Who: Demna Gvasalia eschewed the previous seasons' sporty streetwear aesthetic in favour of a slightly more polished, Parisian-inspired lineup.

The low-down: If you were expecting a new spin on seven-layered parka coats and the like, you might be somewhat disappointed. What seemed to be a semblance of a Parisian's wardrobe, the collection's most notable moments were the suspended shapes on shoulders (as seen in past collections) with ring-shaped necklines to redefine the profile (and for some, a hunched silhouette). Trench coats and double-breasted jackets were worn with nothing beneath, while luxe loungewear options include robes of all sorts, from kimono to duvet-like materials.

Buro loves: Party-ready pieces for everyone—from animal-printed off-shoulder minidresses to head-to-toe sequin looks.
