Who: Titled ‘My Best Self’, J.W. Anderson did away with an elaborate concept for Autumn/Winter 2019, and focused mainly on designing a collection of beautiful clothing that looked good on the runway and in your closet.

Where: The show set was minimal, no elaborate decor here. Full attention were on the creations on the runway. The only flourish were the 16th and 17th century miniature oval-shaped portraits that hung on the walls.

The low-down: There was a strong sense of sophistication and ease. Elevated basics were presented through mixed materials, a frilly crepe blouse extended into a heavy knit at the waist, a ribbed turtleneck fused into a lightweight see-through skirt embellished with feathers at the hem. By far, one of the most commercial-friendly collections of the season. Each look was beautifully crafted and well-thought of and most importantly, incredible wearable.

Buro loves: The quirky ‘thinking caps’. With wide flaps on the side and a tail that pointed upwards at the crown, the accessory added an element of play into the series of seriously sophisticated looks.

Celine

Who: There’s been much ado about Hedi Slimane taking over the French fashion house. After the polarising debut for Spring/Summer 2019, this show was definitely one to watch.

The low-down: Recollect back to the SS19 show, the first look was all we needed to know about that season — ’80s glam rock party girl. This time, the show opened with a grown-up version of that same girl. She wore a white-button down, a pleated box skirt and a sturdy-shouldered oversized blazer. Her accessories of choice: A pair of black knee high boots, a statement belt and a printed scarf. The new Celine girl is now a woman and she means business.

Buro loves: The total plot twist. Many of long-time Celine fans have lamented that the new direction was in retrograde and often compared it to Slimane’s work at Saint Laurent. Thankfully, those comparisons no longer apply in this collection.
