PFW SS19 day 2: A.W.A.K.E and Saint Laurent

What: London-based label designed by Natalia Alaverdian, which launched in 2012, made their runway debut at Paris Fashion Week this season.

Where: After two venue changes (the glass ceiling for the original venue broke and couldn’t be repaired in time, while the second venue fell through due to safety licensing regulations), the show was finally confirmed a few days before, to be held at the Bastille Design Centre.

The Low-down: Alaverdian showed an interesting take on the deconstructed shirt—shirt collars were placed either in front of the chest, or unexpectedly nestled between the shoulder blades. The collection of over 50 looks was a wearable mix of masculine-feminine looks, and sexy-elegant in a largely neutral palette, broken up with nature prints (including a blown-up print of a zebra’s eye). But the best looks were the tailored ones (we loved the last look), which allowed the construction to speak for itself.

Buro Loves: The pleated skirts, and dresses with pleats spliced into the sides of the skirt, oversized mannish blazers, metal chokers, and the aforementioned deconstructed shirts.

Saint Laurent

Who: Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Cindy Crawford, Charlotte Gainsbourg…it was heavy on the celebs, to say the least. On the runway, Abbey Lee Kershaw made a comeback, appearing twice in the show.

Where: With its prime location, directly opposite the Eiffel Tower, Saint Laurent has the most (naturally) gorgeous show venue hands down, especially when the show starts only after the Eiffel Tower is entirely lit with sparkling lights on the hour, in this case, at 8pm. This season saw a touch of Cali vibes with the addition of white palm trees alongside a dark, placid pool of water.

The Low-down: The end of the Eiffel Tower’s light show signals the start of the Saint Laurent show, which saw the models step out into the pool (which turned out to be very shallow) and walk on water, making splashes in their higher-than-high platform sandals (Araminta Lee should’ve taken her cue from these girls). Anthony Vaccarello stayed true to his codes at Saint Laurent-there were lots of leather, lace, and velvet in the blackest of black, juxtaposed against crystal-embellished fishnet bodysuits, star-spangled chainmail, and leopard-print lame. There was a heavy dose of rock and roll attitude; in place of a bandana, crystal headbands and what looked like mini leather belts wrapped around the head. Blazers were worn with micro shorts in leather, snakeskin and corduroy, proving that leg day is not the be missed.

Buro Loves: We can’t wait to get our hands on the velvet band jacket, those skyscraper heels, and Anja Rubik’s leotard. Also, a leopard-print kaftan is definitely a must-have for next season’s beach holiday.
