New York Fashion Week AW18: Highlights of Day 1

Creatures of Comfort

Who  Founder and designer Jade Lai grew up in Hong Kong.

Where  The brand was founded in Los Angeles 12 years ago.

What  Jade describes the collection as “a celebration of womanhood”.

The Low-down  In an attempt to empower women through fashion, the designer sent down looks which she describes as “powerful, confident, [and] doesn’t follow trends”. Started out with heavily layered-up ensembles which may seem mismatched at times, the pops of bright hues and cute polka dots helped to uplift the overall mood. Cardigans, turtleneck-under-shirt pairings, and oversized pantsuits exuded that bookish feel, with hints of femininity in the form of midi pleated skirts that sway with every move.

Buro Loves  While we were hoping to see more glamorous touches on the runway (there were images of Cher in her iconic sparkly jumpsuit pinned on the moodboard), we liked the oversized silhouette that gave off a sense of ease.

Jeremy Scott

Who  Gigi Hadid opened and closed the show in a baby-pink bob wig.

Where  The designer kept the show space clean and simple for the futuristic pieces to shine.

What  Jeremy Scott launched a new capsule collection with MAC Cosmetics on the same day.

The Low-down  Jeremy Scott stuck to a futuristic theme this season, with out-of-the world pieces and looks that’ll no doubt earn a double (or triple) take. Case in point: hooped mini dresses, vinyl A-line skirts (worn over über short denim) and metallic finishings. The fluffy fur patches and bear prints on the other hand were inspired by Popples Bear—a popular ’80s toy à la The Care Bears. To finish off the looks, the brand has also collaborated with Italian footwear brand Moon Boot for an array of OTT winter boots adorning the models’ feet. Are those Balenciaga’s Crocs of the season? We shall see.

Buro Loves  The metallic hues in all shades and forms.

Tom Ford

Who  Tom Ford’s streak of star-studded FROW continues; this time with A-list attendees such as Julianne Moore, Elizabeth Banks, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Zayn Malik.

Where  Park Avenue Armory, where the men’s collection was also shown three days ago.

What  ’80s party animal—literally.

The Low-down  Like its menswear collection, wild animal prints, metallic sheen and puffer coats were a mainstay throughout the collection, but what differs the women’s from the men’s line, are the seemingly less skin-baring looks (have you seen the Tom Ford boys in boxers?). Instead, the girls strutted down the runway in impeccably tailored pieces, from a cinched-at-the-waist tuxedo jacket to a power-shoulder jumpsuit. Spot the “Pussy Power” bag that is a timely nod to the #MeToo movement.

Buro Loves  A combo of head-turning sequinned dress, leopard-print tights, glitter headband and larger-than-life hoop earrings? Yes please.
