5 Things to know about Gucci Cruise 2019

1.     From an old pharmacy box for SS18 to a timer that counts down to the AW18 show, Gucci is not one to shy away from quirky show invitations, but for Cruise 2019, the brand took a more traditional route by sending out telegrams ahead of the show.

2.     As announced earlier, the Italian fashion house will be showing its Spring/Summer 2019 collection in Paris as a three-part homage to France, with the Cruise 2019 show as the prelude. The location? The Promenade Des Alyscamps—a Roman necropolis and UNESCO world heritage site in the French Riviera city of Arles, South of France. Christianised in the 4th century (it used to be a burial ground), the rich history and mysterious vibes made the site the ideal place for Alessandro Michele’s creations this season.

3.     An eclectic group of celebs such as Saoirse Ronan, A$AP Rocky, Salma Hayek and Kai from K-pop group EXO attended the event, but it was the surprise performance at the after-party that was the most talked about. Sir Elton John—who will be dressed in Gucci for his farewell tour—performed his hit songs while guests partied the night away.

4.     Scheduled to start at 9.30pm, the middle of the runway was lit with a line of fire moments before models walked down the pathway to the beats of a haunting soundtrack, surrounded by ancient tombs. Inspired by creative director Alessandro Michele’s fascination with death and afterlife, the 114 looks that were sent out exuded a gothic aura, juxtaposed with that bit of retro glamour. Velvet-on-velvet looks in the form of cape-over-gowns was introduced; a nun-like gown with an encrusted ribcage definitely turned heads; and the finale dress was a Victorian-inspired white nightgown, complete with a chunky cross choker.

5.     Gucci’s collections are never complete without equally show-stopping accessories, and for Cruise 2019, there was an assortment of cross jewellery—chokers, pins, and necklaces held by hand—to complement the theme of the collection. Most of the ensembles were paired with leggings in different prints and hues, finished off with veils and statement-making headpieces (that will be on the best-dressed list at the recent Met Ball, for sure). The ancient death mask that was spotted on a male model definitely raised a few eyebrows.
