While the traditional way to dress is by donning a cheongsam (especially one in red), the latest designs for the festive holiday come with a modern twist that’s versatile enough to be worn all year round.

Khoon Hooi
From the emperor yellow “MeiXing” dress with dramatic puff sleeves to “Bingqing”, a party-ready sleeveless qipao with pearls that embellish the front and back of the bodice in elegant geometry, Khoon Hooi’s latest collection for the Lunar New Year is fit for the wardrobe of a queen, or top socialite Madam Lee, to be exact. For the protagonist who is loved for her impeccable sense of style, the designer imagines a line-up of show-stopping pieces that are equal parts traditional and modern, and full of the fine tailoring and luxe details that range from cascading organza ruffles to 3D florals that the brand is renowned for.

Wynka
This season, the closet of creative director Karen Lau’s mother served as the starting point for Wynka’s Chinese New Year collection. Telling the story of how a kampung girl took her heritage to the big city, the lineup blends old Shanghai influences with the brand’s unmistakable whimsical aesthetic across statement pieces enhanced with unique details, such as vintage pearl brocades. Rich colours are used alongside muted pastels across various styles that showcase gorgeous florals and abstractions on unique materials to craft pieces sure to turn heads.

Brian Khoo
From mini satin robes to cut-out cheongsams and oversized ombre shirts with slanted openings, Brian Khoo’s Lunar 2022 collection masterfully infuses contemporary trends with tradition across a jewel-toned lineup that is absolutely luscious. Curved hems of a Chinese collar are reflected into subtle details ranging from pockets to sleeves, while mesh panels and corset boning (hand-embroidered, may we add?) bring an unexpected twist to traditional attire that is both timeless and chic.

According to Innai Red, the Tiger future is bright. The brand’s latest collection, entitled ‘Ru Yi’ (which literally means “as one wishes” or “everything goes well” in Chinese), embraces the power of bright shades and bold prints via versatile yet recognisable designs that range from matching printed separates featuring overlapping scallop detailing and pearl embellished clusters to embroidered qipaos with exaggerated ruffles and multicoloured beadwork across the collar.
