Accessory of the day: Burberry’s AW19 novel padded shrugs

Amidst the myriad of accessory offerings Riccardo Tisci produced for his sophomore season at Burberry, one stood out for both its staggering form and suggested function. A plush folded article was seen draped over the arms of a few girls who walked the show. With no visible fastenings nor a hint of sleeves, the straight-edged item most strongly resembled a padded throw. Could this really be the start of something new? Seeing as the brand has long been known for their iconic scarves, launching a new format of one would not come as much of a surprise — albeit without checks. Instead, we spotted one with the new Burberry monogram peeking out from the underside of a painterly print, a seascape illustrated as homage to Japanese art, and another, just arbitrarily featuring an oyster print.

“I have been thinking a lot about England as a country of contrasts, from the structured to the rebellious and free,” writes Tisci in a post-show press release to outline the thought process behind his sartorial ode to the country, “and I wanted to celebrate how these elements coexist.” Well, Malaysia, too, is a country of contrasts and this duvet dressing trend might just require a healthy dose of rebellion, considering our sweltering clime. But fashion is pain and air-conditioned malls are abundant — so, we say, bring it on!
