How to nail the Barbiecore look (and everything you’ll need to do it)

What makes a makeup look Barbiecore-certified? How can one adopt the buzzy aesthetic faithfully? All this and more below…

Last year, the “bimbofication” of women took TikTok by storm. The microtrend saw girls embracing long-forgotten Y2K trends—from bleached blonde hair to hyper-femininity and a penchant for all things pink and sparkly, these are just a few things that came back en vogue with the movement.

Bimbocore has captured the attention of many, and its draw goes beyond aesthetics. Whether one adopted the trend as an attempt to heal their inner pick-me girl, as a form of rebellion to challenge the misogynistic condemnation of early-aughts “bimbos”, or just because looking like a bimbo is fun, the wave of bimbofication defined the cultural zeitgeist of last year.

Now, with the Margot Robbie-lead Barbie film set to hit our shores in less than 10 days, a newer subset of the trend has also become popular this year: Barbiecore. While Bimbocore was focused on a bigger narrative shift, Barbiecore is more of a hone-in on the aesthetics of the movement. After all, early Y2K fashion certainly draws plenty of inspiration from our favourite Mattel Doll. Therefore, with Barbiecore, there is less emphasis on the cultural and social aspects of being a bimbo—it’s all about the look.

Now, this begs the question: How can you emulate the Barbiecore trend in your own style? Good news—we’re here to help. There are three motifs that guide the Barbiecore aesthetic in makeup specifically:

  1. Lots of gloss, shimmer, and glitter
  2. A neat, polished finish (read: Perfectly yassified)
  3. Lots and lots of pink!

Once you incorporate these three tenets, you’re pretty much there. To make it easier on you, we’ve compiled all the inspo you could need to hop on the Barbie trend for yourself from our favourite makeup artists—as well as everything you’ll need to get the look.
