Chanel Travel Diary takes us along for a road trip on the Californian coast
Moments captured in colours
The best travel experience is when the journey becomes the destination. For Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer Lucia Pica, she came to that realisation during a coast-to-city road trip to California. From the sun-drenched horizons of the coastline to the gritty textures of downtown LA, Pica created her very own moodboard for Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2017 makeup collection. What makes the range stand out this season is the unexpected colour palette—it’s akin to virtually exploring the city by way of blue-greens with grey undertones and rich coppery reds.
The highlight of the collection is the Palette Essentielle: A 3-in-1 face and cheek compact (comprising a concealer, highlighter and blush) that is handbag-friendly for touching up your complexion on-the-go. “I wanted a product that could achieve that fresh skin look I do on shoots,” says Pica. “The palette is my interpretation of a modern woman’s approach to make-up. Makeup should not be covering like a mask, it should be worn lightly on the skin.”

For the eyes, it’s all about an enigmatic sense of intensity (like the ocean, according to Pica) this fall. Two smoky shades of Les 4 Ombres Eyeshadow took inspiration from outdoors, while two contrasting hues of Ombre Premiere Crème and Mono Eyeshadows offers a nuanced look with added depth when layered beneath.

“I love the idea of matte and shine existing together on the face. I might create a dewy skin with a matte eye, or a matte, velvet lip with a glossy eye,” says Pica. For a vivid juxtaposition, she imbued bright colours for the lips as a counterpoint to the eyes. From nude beige to corals and burnished reds, an element of duality exists within the textures you can explore. Those who love a nude look can opt for Rouge Allure Ink in Lost and Rouge Coco in Daylight; while colour enthusiasts can choose from a range of oranges and reds, including Rouge Allure Velvet in First Light and Nightfall.
