Where: The Godown Arts Centre

While on a trip in the Tōhoku region of Japan, photographer Chai Ming Yang was met with the massive 400-kilometre seawall built as a coastal defence against tsunamis. He then proceeded to study the relationship between the sea, the people, and the structure, photographing different parts of the seawall as it became a part of the locals’ lives. In commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Chai—with the support of the Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur—is putting together his first solo exhibition, featuring his photographs of the sea wall. Through his photographs, Chai reflects on how the people of the Tōhoku region continue their lives around the seawall, the line between safety and sacrifice, and how the seawall has affected the perception of the ocean.
