So, um, what actually is pickleball? You’ve probably heard of it from your friends or seen it on your social media feeds—supposedly, it’s the hot new thing that everyone is obsessed with. Well, we’re here to shed some light on the sport for the unfamiliar. Somewhere between ping pong, badminton and tennis, pickleball is a hybrid racquet sport projected to become the fastest-growing sport globally. It involves a court, a net, paddles, and a hollow ball and can be played in either singles or doubles. Simple enough, really.
As for why it’s such a firm favourite? That’s probably thanks to its accessibility. A pickleball court itself is pretty small, meaning that gameplay is a lot less strenuous than other racquet sports like like tennis. This makes it surprisingly easy to pick up and master, whether you’re young and nimble or on the stiffer side. Of course, it’s also genuinely fun to play, which has helped its popularity along significantly!
