Since 1932, Omega has fulfilled the prestigious role of Official Timekeeper at the Olympic Games and now with its 27th occasion, Omega will continue to uphold its duties and go beyond its timekeeping to provide Rio de Janeiro with much more. Together with Brazilian non-profit organization—Viva Rio, Omega has marked the official countdown of the Olympic Games with their support of 12 “Social Action” projects that will improve the socioeconomic and educational growth in the host city.
The Community Countdown will encompass a selection of community spaces and education centres, as well as projects that will help young people and their families achieve valuable and long-term improvements. Social Action #1 will provide support for vulnerable mothers and will benefit approximately 500 women per year. Targeting the neighbourhood of Costa Barros, which has the highest violence indicators in the regions and one of the lowest HDIs in the city, this Social Action will deliver training and group activities for the Chico Mendes community. By teaching pregnant women and mothers techniques and practices that best stimulate the development of their babies—both during pregnancy and in the early stages of their children’s lives, the project effectively aspires to improve physical and emotional healthcare for families.
As 12 community projects take action within the Olympic host city, Omega enables everyone anywhere in the world to play a part through social media. With the Viva Rio logo shaped as a heart, Omega encourages users to support their projects by displaying their own heart symbol, however simple or creative as they like, and sharing it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #OMEGAVIVARIO. For every heart shared with the hashtag, Omega will donate 16 cents to the charity as a further commitment to the partnership.
