April birthstone: The best diamond jewellery to shop this month

As the most popular gemstone around, diamonds need no introduction. But if you’d like to get to know a girl’s best friend that much better, we’ve got a brief lowdown.

Derived from the Greek word ‘adamas’, meaning unconquerable or invincible, diamonds are the hardest known material in the world, with a Vickers hardness that ranges from 70 to 150 GPa. The earliest traces of diamonds were found in India as early as 4 BCE, although they’re now mined all over the world. Apart from the colourless hue that we’re all familiar with, the stone also comes in a wide range of colours, such as black, blue, green, pink purple, orange, red, and yellow.

Aside from being the one and only birthstone of April babies, diamonds are also, as we all know, the most popular stone for engagement rings. While the reason is unknown, according to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the first diamond engagement ring on record was given by Archduke Maximillian of Austria to his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy, in 1477. The gemstone is also the gift of choice to celebrate the 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries.

Our picks this month include a variety of options for one to choose from. There’s the well-loved Frivole bracelet featuring heart-shaped diamond pavéd petals from Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier’s Hand of Fatima necklace that’s a symbol of protection, the rose-gold Link earrings from Tiffany & Co.’s HardWear collection. Alternatively, you can explore the offerings from brands including the ear cuff from Adina Reyter, the sleek tennis bracelet from Sophie Bille Brahe, and more.
