March birthstone: The best aquamarine jewellery to shop this month

Out of the blue

Text: Joan Kong

This month, the spotlight's on the "water of the sea"

For those of you who are born in March, aquamarine's the birthstone that's uniquely yours. Named after the Latin words for sea water, the stone has been linked to the ocean and water throughout history. Fishermen in Rome and "used it as protection, for safe travel by boat, and for luck in catching fish", and it was well-loved by the Sumerians, Egyptians, Hebrews, and Greeks too.

Available in a soothing hue that ranges from light to deep blue, and sometimes, blue-green, the semi-precious stone is said to impart calm—and courage—for those who wear them. It's also considered a stone of eternal youth and happiness, so if you're looking for a meaningful charm for your loved ones (or even better, for yourself), aquamarine will make a good pick.

Our selections this month include an intricate blue-on-blue ring featuring aquamarine and sapphire by Delfina Delettrez (aka Fendi's fourth-generation who's also the Italian Maison's creative director of jewellery); a Seb Brown signet ring that truly lets the aquamarine shine; and a pair of raw aquamarine stud earrings from Jorge Adeler.
