4 Things to know about the IWC Portugieser Automatic—as seen on Lee Dong Wook in ‘Tale of the Nine-Tailed’

Every successful K-drama has more or less the same components—a highly anticipated cast that brings the script to life, and a storyline featuring budding careers, family hardships, love triangles, and last but not least, noteworthy fashion. In Lee Dong Wook’s latest drama, Tale of the Nine-Tailed, it’s no different.

Portraying the character of a male gumiho who lives in the city, the actor is always dressed in an array of suave, polished looks. And since he has to carry out his missions on the dot, it’s only apt that he accessorise his outfits with a timepiece. His watch of choice? The IWC Portugieser Automatic 42mm that perfectly complements his ensembles. Want to know more about the timepiece? Ahead are a few facts to read up on:

The IWC Portugieser has gone through a few name changes since its launch

First introduced in 1939, the watch was first created for Rodrigues and Antonio Teixera from Portugal who had a specific request—a large wristwatch with the same precision as a pocket watch. It was initially named Mod.228 (after its case number) before being renamed to Portuguese, and later, Portugieser in 2015.

Its well-loved specs

While the Portugieser’s distinct large rounded case has remained one of its main charms throughout the years, the works are what makes it so noteworthy. Powered by the IWC-manufactured 52010 calibre, the watch has an impressive seven-day power reserve, and not to mention the legendary Pellaton winding system that can be admired through the exhibition case back.

The two new models

The IWC Portugieser Automatic has nine variations in total, and the two latest designs that were launched this year are the Boutique Editions that are inspired by the maritime world—namely the 18-karat 5N gold case and blue dial, and the stainless steel case with an eye-catching burgundy dial.
