BURO Gadget Guide: 5 New tech gadgets to check out in June 2021

This month, we’re seeing new additions in the wearable and laptop departments, including completely fresh drops as well as updates to existing models. There’s also a new 4K TV in-store to consider upgrading to for your viewing pleasure of the latest film and TV releases on Netflix or Disney+ Hotstar. Without further ado, here are the top new tech gadgets to check out in June 2021.

1. Garmin Venu 2 & 2S

Following the launch of the Venu series in 2019, Garmin is introducing its successors in the form of the Garmin Venu 2 and 2S. Unlike the brand’s other smartwatches that are geared towards athletes and high-performance activities, the Venu 2 Series caters to a crowd looking for a lifestyle smartwatch that covers all the basics (and then some), while looking stylish for daily wear. The Venu 2 debuts with a 45mm case and enhanced battery life of up to 11 days, whereas the 2S comes with a 40mm case and up to 10 days of battery life.

In terms of class, the Venu 2 rivals the Apple Watch Series 6, boasting 24/7 health monitoring features including heart rate, fitness age, advanced sleep, respiration, Pulse Ox3, all-day stress, hydration, and women’s health (menstrual cycle and pregnancy trackers). However, there’s no ECG on the Venu. Additionally, both models are equipped with more than 25 built-in sports applications and advanced strength training profiles that show you which target muscle groups are active, on top of new activity profiles for HIIT workouts, indoor climbing, bouldering, and hiking.

2. Microsoft Surface Laptop 4

Designed for performance, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 highlights multitasking power with up to 70 per cent more speed than before thanks to its powerful 11th Gen Intel® Core™ or AMD Ryzen™ Microsoft Surface Edition processors. This is the first time Microsoft is allowing consumers to choose between the two chips. In terms of memory, it can be configured with 8GB or 16GB LPDDR4x RAM and up to 512 GB of storage.

The Surface Laptop 4 will be available in two sizes: the 13.5-inch and 15-inch, both of which feature a 3:2 screen ratio. The former is preferable for convenience and portability, whilst the latter is great for split-screen viewing of multiple apps—aka serious multitasking. Battery life is rated at up to 19 hours, depending on which variant and processor you opt for. Both come equipped with a 720p HD f.2.0 front-facing camera, Omnisonic Speakers with Dolby Atmos® and Bluetooth® 5.0 connectivity as standard.

3. Sony Bravia XR Master Series A90J 4K OLED TV

First unveiled back in January, Sony has finally announced the arrival of its Bravia XR TV series in Malaysia. There are five models at launch, with the Master Series A90J 4K OLED TV leading the line-up. Sony claims the flagship model is its best-ever OLED TV yet, boasting the revolutionary Cognitive Processor XR that’s design to portray sound, colour and depth the way our brains think and respond.

As the name suggests, it features 4K Ultra HD resolution, paired with the brand’s unique OLED panel that delivers pure blacks and extreme brightness at 120 frames per second. Complemented with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, it promises a superior cinematic, gaming and audio experience. Other smart features include Apple AirPlay support, built-in Chromecast, Google TV, and Voice Search. The model is currently offered only in the 65-inch variant for the local market.

4. Fitbit Ace 3 Special Edition: Minions

For the young and young at heart (hey—we don’t judge here), Fitbit has just released the Ace 3 Special Edition: Minions. Developed to encourage kids aged 6 and above to stay active and build healthy habits with the whole family, the new wearable features an interactive Minion clock face, Minions-inspired accessory bands and Minions-themed activity badges (coming soon).

Aside from the adorable elements inspired by Illumination’s Minions, the fitness tracker comes with the same safeguards as the entire Ace line, including step tracking, activity and sleep stats, and parent-approved privacy controls. Alternatively, adults can check out the Fitbit Luxe for a more sophisticated wearable to match your kids and/or to suit your lifestyle.

Price: RM328

Availability: Lazada, Shopee, Harvey Norman and Fitbit from June 7 onwards

5. Acer Swift X

Not to be confused with the Acer Swift 3X launched last year, the new Swift X laptop is Acer’s latest and strongest laptop powered by the AMD Ryzen™ 5000 Series Mobile Processor and latest NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3050 Ti graphics card. Measuring only 1.39kg and 17.9mm with a 14-inch display, this lightweight, portable device is ideal for creatives or gamers looking for entry- to mid-level laptops.

The Swift X packs up to 16GB of RAM and 2TB of SSD storage for a powerhouse performance. Meanwhile, the 59Wh battery offers up to 17 hours of battery life and supports fast charging. In terms of connectivity, it comes with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and a USB Type-A for fast data transfers and USB charging.
