Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023: Galaxy Z Flip5, Galaxy Z Fold5, Watch6 Series and Galaxy Tab S9 Series

“Have you heard about this Samsung Flip phone or whatever? Apparently, you only have to look at it once, and then it gets, like, stuck inside your mind or something,” says a young woman in a recent Samsung trailer promoting the latest Galaxy Z Flip. Colour us intrigued—how else could the tech giant improve one of its most-loved foldable devices, we thought?

Our questions were answered tonight when Samsung held its bi-annual Unpacked event in its home of Seoul—the first time ever since the inaugural event was held in Las Vegas in 2010. A side note: The event has also taken place in Barcelona, Berlin, London, New York City and San Francisco, so Samsung’s decision to host it at home is a rather impactful move in acknowledging its roots. After all, South Korea is where leading technology, traditions and pop culture intersect to inspire innovation.

Samsung Galaxy is the fastest-growing category for foldables, and it has evolved from being a shiny, trendy communication device into a totally new lifestyle. Tonight, four new announcements were made, further opening a new world of unlimited possibilities—here, we take a closer look at each new addition to the Galaxy ecosystem. Are you ready for what’s next?

Who would have thought when the foldable Flip phone was introduced four years ago, it would revolutionise productivity and lifestyle, converting millions of people to join the ‘Flip side’ year after year? The compact smartphone indeed opens up a powerful, connected experience in day-to-day life in the facets of entertainment, proactiveness, health and well-being.

What’s new?

Design: The newly named Flex Window (also known as the cover screen) is 3.78 times larger than its predecessor, allowing you to do much more, even without flipping the phone open. Think of additional customisation options that feel more familiar and intuitive, such as swiping up to access your Samsung Wallet, and boarding passes and more—everything you love in your standard smartphone but in a cool, compact size.

Display: The main screen still opens up to 6.7 inches with a dynamic Amoled display and 120Hz refresh rate, delivering a top-notch video-viewing and gaming experience.

Cameras: The dual rear 12MP lenses are enhanced with AI solutions to reduce noise and improve quality, typically in low-light settings, further elevating the device’s powerful camera experience. Even when you zoom in, the image signal processing algorithm corrects any visual noise. Additionally, bokeh effects are heightened to make your portraits come alive. Meanwhile, the front selfie camera is maintained with 10MPs.

Durability: The Flip5 comes with a reinforced display and a new shock dispersion layer. The new Flex Hinge with a dual rail structure makes the foldable experience aesthetically balanced and solid, with the ability to diffuse external and internal impact.

Prices for the Galaxy Z Flip5 start at RM4,499 (256GB) and is available for purchase from the 18th of August 2023.

If you have yet to experience the Galaxy Fold (where have you been?), think of it as a powerful PC in your pocket where impressive performance meets flexibility. From multitasking to entertainment, the latest model is meticulously refined to help you do more each day.

What makes a foldable experience unique?

Design: Weighing at 187g, this is the thinnest and lightest Fold yet, featuring the same new Flex Hinge technology as the Flip5. It offers an expansive and immersive 7.6-inch screen when open. Despite that, it is awfully easy to take anywhere with you.

Display: Its main screen provides uninterrupted viewing with Infinity Flex Display, so you can enjoy watching movies in any orientation—be it portrait or landscape. Peak brightness has increased by more than 30 percent, up to 1750 nits 28, for an optimal viewing experience, even under bright sunlight.

Performance: The Fold5 runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform for Galaxy, providing users with an immersive gaming experience on the largest Samsung smartphone screen. With an advanced cooling system that dissipates heat more intelligently, the Fold5 can easily and comfortably control TV bingeing or marathon gaming sessions for long hours.

A slim companion: The S Pen is now slimmer and compact, making real-time note-taking or writing easier and more comfortable. The Slim S Pen case is available in a variety of styles and colours to reflect your personal style.

Prices for the Galaxy Z Fold5 start at RM6,799 (256GB) and is available for purchase on the 18th of August, 2023

The Galaxy Watch6 series packs powerful performance in a refined and sleek design, offering intuitive insights that aim to help users build healthier habits every day and through the night.

What to expect:

Design: The new watch now boasts a slimmer bezel in contrast to a larger and more vibrant face display with 40mm or 44mm options. A more fantastic selection of stylish watch faces is also available.

Function: Watch6 introduces Sleep—a sleep-coaching analysis programme to encourage you to build healthy habits. Sleep reveals your overall health status by tracking your sleep and identifying the different stages of your cycle. It can then personalise and enhance your snooze time by offering solutions so you can make the most out of your day and night. A fun feature to look forward to is the Sleep Animal—an avatar representing the type of creature that resembles your sleeping pattern.

Software: Three-in-one bioactive sensors help you detect accurate information—ECG, blood pressure, heart rate and body composition. Tracking your heart rate has never been so effortless—from your wrist and at your convenience. Get alerts when you have an abnormally low or fast heart rate and a personalised heart rate zone to help you pace your workouts according to your capabilities and prevent burnout.

The return of a classic: Samsung brings back the Watch6 Classic with the signature rotating bezel that fans love. It’s thinner and more refined, bringing a modern touch while staying true to traditional timepieces.

Prices for the Galaxy Watch6 start at RM1,099 (40mm BT) and RM1,399 (43mm BT) for the Watch6 Classic. They will be available worldwide from the 18th of August, 2023.

The final announcement of the night is the introduction of the Tab S9 Series, offering a premium tablet experience with visuals that pop with true-to-life colours and an IP68 rating for both the Tab and the S Pen.

What’s new?

Display: Featuring a bright, gorgeous screen, the Tab S9 comes with a Dynamic Amoled 2x Display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and HDR10+, which ensures scene-by-scene tone optimisation with a wide range of colours. In addition, Vision Booster technology automatically detects bright lighting conditions and adapts to keep the screen vivid. Eye Comfort also reduces eye strain with low blue light and is reduced by more than 70 per cent.

Durability: The new Tab comes with a rating of IP68 and is highly water- and dust-resistant. It also features a redesigned structure for dispersing heat above the display and below its body. The new vapour chamber prevents temperature spikes without adding thickness to the tab.

Performance: Powered by the Snapdragon 8 gen two mobile platforms for Galaxy, the S9 series offers a huge increase in CPU performance, unparalleled connectivity and top-notch game play. In fact, it is the fastest Tab S series yet.
