When: From now to 19 February 2024

Where: National Art Gallery

Price: Free entry

An exhibit to add to your artsy agenda this weekend is Dhan Illiani’s art installation at the National Art Gallery titled ‘Niyat’. Its name is derived from the Malay word “niat” and Arabic’s “niyyah”, which both mean purpose and intention. Coincidentally, it is also the nickname that those close to Dhan Illiani call her. The experiential installation highlights societal assumptions, problems, and expectations with its different elements—including tattooed hearts on leather head coverings that represent wearing your heart on your sleeve. Like the multidisciplinary she is, Dhan Iliani is also a professional women’s hockey player on the national team. In ‘Niyat’, you can also explore her love for art and sports, and discover how both forms are more similar than you think.
