Merdeka (and the start of September at that) is just about here! While we might not get a long weekend out of it, Team BURO is still going to make sure you have a good two days out and about. In this BURO Weekend Guide, we tell you all about the Proudly Malaysian Market, Ria-Ria by Olivia, Artisan Playground’s nasi kandar buffet, and so much more happening on 31 August and 1 September 2024.

What better way to ring in Merdeka than by supporting our very own homegrown brands? Head downtown to REXKL for the Proudly Malaysian Market—the name speaks for itself. You’ll get to know a strong lineup of local brands, covering fashion, accessories, handmade products, and food! On top of shopping, there will also be live performances and an open mic to enjoy, so you’re guaranteed to be occupied for the day!

Take your Merdeka celebrations back in time with ‘Nostalgia Era’! Put on your best retro outfits (or borrow your mum’s favourite archived kebayas!) and head to Stadium Merdeka for a weekend of shopping, music, and, of course, eating. Retailers include Rareblee, Laman Tepi Rumah, and Cloud Crystal. Vendors such as Brie N Butter and Whisk will make sure you stay well-fed, while local artists including Leaism and Soul Boss will keep the tunes going. Not to mention, you’ll also get to try your hand at batik, cultural dancing, and more with the schedule of workshops planned!

In celebration of Merdeka, Habib has transformed its Harta Space with a special exhibition, ‘Pesan & Kenangan,’ curated by Yap Sau Bin. Featuring pieces from Pakharudin Sulaiman’s art collection, the exhibition revolves around two significant themes. Kenangan celebrates the timeless ideas, values, and individuals that have shaped our past, while Pesan offers a compelling reminder of the better future we must strive to create. Additionally, the exhibition honours the contributions of local artists and cultural figures, showcasing their impactful ideas and visions for the community.
